I get a kick out of reading ads with obviously misadvertised boats. The Montauk is arguably the most misrepresented boat in all of the classified ad media. Here's one:
1971 17' Montauk. Used to be a police boat. Has 1991 100hp Commercial Johnson with hydraulic steering and SS prop. Very strong and fast. Humminbird depth/fish finder, compass, brand new CD player never installed. Bottom is painted but boat has been lift kept for 4 years. New seat cover on original teak flip seat. New battery last year. 2 new six gallon gas tanks under seat with mounted filter system. Comes with galvanized roller trailer with new tires and rims. Call 410 215 3579. Keith

Who here can get closest to guessing what model/year this 17 actually is?

The console is from a 1983 - 1985 Commercial hull which is where the double straight front console grab rails com from. Who knows what the hull originally left the factory as nor, when it left. You would need to have a stencil # for that. My bet is that has been painted over when the interior and front area was modified.

That standard console is from a 1983 to 1985 but the shepards crook might have been changed by a previous owner.
If you look close at one of the photos, there might be the old holes of the shepards crook. So, this console could have come from a recreational model as it does have teak doors.
The standard console for the cuddy models had a single bar down the center that replaced the shepards crook.

I see the holes but it looks like Swiss cheese to to me. I still haven't found out my Montauk 17 has t rails it dose? The stencil number is on the last picture of my personal page. I may have to ask Chuck @ Boston Whaler. Do you think?
ADDED: Joe
