I live in Central Va.

After lookin, thinking, debating, I bought a 1970 Katama with a 93 Env 88hp today

Was first thinking a bay boat, then carolina skiff then wahoo but I just got attracked to whalers.

I grew up using other peoples whalers and it feels good to have my own, even though its old and needs some tender loving care and parts. Seems sea worthery and good to go but needs some fix up.

My stomach was full of knots today over what I need to do to it but I am excited to have the boat. Come on guys, tell me I did a good thing.

I am putting it in Lake Anna tomorrow with my son to give her a test and hopefully break it in with my flyrod.

It's tough to tell from the pictures and not knowing what you paid but I did somthing similar last year and haven't looked back.

Ours is a 93 Dauntless 15 with a 93 Evinrude 60. It's a solid boat but it needed some cosmetic TLC. I just joined the forum but I"ll do a post on it soon.

A real good Evinrude mechanic on Rt. 1 in Dumfries. There is also a very good but expensive fiberglass repair outfit in Ft. Washington called Fiberglass Fabricators.

We've had a ball with ours but I'm already looking to upsize to something closer to 20'.

i paid 4500

The boat interior has the usually spider cracks in certain areas, looks like original interior paint. A little chipping around bilg areas in corners but not bad. Hull seems okay, some spider cracks but not bad. He painted the bottom with that heavy black boat paint, dont know if this is good or not. It doesnt have the original windshield or seats up font but the console and drivers seat are original and not too bad. The lights need to be rewired.

For the trailer, one of the bunk brackets is rusted and needs to be replace. The boat position on trailer needs to be a adjusted too.

The engines has about 200 hours and seems to be services well. He hadnt use the boat much because he has two others. Although his services records had shown a repeated thermostat sticking problem, which I guess means I probably have to replace it? Hopefully the heat alarm wont go off today.

Boat looks good in the photos, I think you made a great move! your not riding around in the same new boat as your Neighbor. A classic Whaler is a good thing!.......B)

Welcome Aboard. The 17' hulls are great all around Whalers.

I think I would order a new windscreen from Mills Canvas and continue to use the boat.
Also, fix the bunks and the navigational wiring as soon as possible.
You can fix the rest of the small things as you go along.
