I have an 18' Outrage, 1987. Very satisfied with the boat. Currently I am running a 99, 90 hp Mercury and giving serious thought to going with twin engines. Several on this web site have run twin 70's. From what I can find most 70's weigh about 230lbs. My 90, 2 stroke weights 303. If I add another 90 could I run it without reverse rotation on one engine? I don't think anyone I have read about with 70's change the lower rotation. Any thoughts on how the boat will handle the other 90 Mercury? I cetainly do not want to ruin the handling. If anyone has twins they would like to sell, post and I will get with you. I have never been in a boat with twins unless it was much larger. thanks in advance for any suggestions or thoughts. have a good summer. To my knowledge counter-rotating twins under 115hp are not available. I have twin 70 Yamahas on my 1990 18 Outrage. I like having twins. If I was to repower, it would be with a single 150. Twin 2 strokes are loud. Some people have twin 90's and are happy with them. Twin 90 Mercs do add more weight and the boat will sit a few inches lower in the stern. Rigging for twins is also more expensive, as is maintenance.

Abbie Prince you just missed out, I just sold my twin 70's(actually 3 motors)package. The boat was awesome with the twins,but like Dan said twice the maintance,twice the cost. There is a guy over on CW that just put two 90 hp e-techs on his outrage 18! Hes definately way over the recommended transom weight.

Can you run into insurance problems by overpowering a boat. My 18 outrage is only rated for 150hp if I were to go to twin 90's would I run into any problems?

There are companies that will ensure your boat, you just need to be hones about the HP. if your current insurance agent won't write the policy, PM me and I can give you a name that will. i have the same boat with a 175HP eTec single.
