Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: 80's Outrage bow locker handle pull location?

As most of you know we here at WhalerCentral try and find out when and what parts have been changed through the years. We also try and determine when part locations have been changed.

Lately I have been looking at photos of 80's era Outrages and see that the placement of the bow locker handle pulls are in different places.

My 1985 Outrage 18' has the handle pull on the rear of the bow locker.
In a photo of a 1984 Outrage 18', the handle pull was on the front of the bow locker.
Not sure exactly what year this changed so let's try and narrow it down.

So, I started this thread and wrote an article to determine what the other members here have on there 80's era Outrages. I will continue to add to the article when more information is submitted.

Please let us know where you bow locker handle pull is located. Give us the year and size of your Outrage. If you wish to submit a photo, please use the submit photo link on the left sidebar and we may use that photo in the article.

My 1983 Outrage 18 had the handle at the bow and it did not have hinges from the factory. I added them myself in 1989.

I think the original design intended the bow locker to be lifted at the bow to pay out the anchor and rode. I reality that was a poor design as it is much easier and useful to have the hatch hinged to so the entire thing swings out of the way and stays there without the need for an arm to hold it open.

Being hinged, it also does not fly around when going over big waves.

Thanks Tom.

My 1985 Outrage did not have hinges either so I added them.
Apparently the hinges were standard starting in late 1988 models.
Here is my earlier article on bow locker hinges.

1983 Outrage 18' (Tom W Clark)
1983 Outrage 18' (In2Deep)
1983 Outrage 18' (firstoffshore)
1984 Outrage 18' (eto04)

So far it looks like the change might have been sometime during the making of the 1984 year model.

Some 1984 models have the handle pull in the front and another has the handle pull in the rear.

We probably need to start looking at the HIN numbers to narrow it down even further.
According to the 18' Hull Owners list below, we can see that the Deck Plates were changed from PYHI to Beckson during the 1984 year model.
Maybe we just found another slight change during this same time frame for the bow locker handle pull location.

Here is the 18' Hull Owners list:

I have a set of deck hatches off an 1982 22 Outrage with the latch at the bow. My 1985 had the latch toward the console.

My 83 Outrage has the handle towards the bow,I also addaed a pair of perko hinges. It makes more sense to have the handle placed towards the stern, ergonomically and it would provide better leverage when opening the locker.I thought mine was placed towards the bow because at one time there was a chair mounted on the locker door because it had an aluminum plate mounted to the underneath of the locker door?

OK.

It looks like the change was sometime in 1984...

Front handle pull:
1979 Outrage 22' (rbritdu)
1982 Newport 18' (Eri)
1982 Outrage 22' (Jeff)
1983 Outrage 18' (Tom W Clark)
1983 Outrage 18' (In2Deep)
1983 Outrage 18' (firstoffshore)
1984 Outrage 18' (eto04)

Rear handle pull:
1985 Outrage 18' (GeorgiaWhaler)
1985 Outrage 18' (HarleyFXDL)
1985 Outrage 18' (Joe Kriz)

So, let's hear from 1984 Outrage owners only along with their HIN number of their hull so we can get a little closer on what month this changed occurred...

If you aren't already on these lists, submit your info so we can add you along with the handle pull information.

OK, Joe. After reading your Hull Identification Number article I'm wondering if I refer to my boat as the right thing. Its always been a 1984 to me but looking at your article I see that its a 1985 model built in August of 1984. Would you call that an '85 or an '84. Either way, the handle is in the back and I have hinges on the port side I assume added by a previous owner.

Georgia Whaler,

Yes, you have a 1985 year model that was manufactured in 1984.
Just like the automobile industry, new models are sold a few months before the start of the new year.

Harley, I have added you also to the Owners List.
Thanks.

1987 18', handle in rear, no hinges.

My hull has the handle in the rear toward the console. I am guessing this means that the anchor locker is considered part of the bare hull and was switched in 1987. No hinges, I added them last year.

So far, all 1984 models have the bow locker handle pulls in the front.
We need to hear from Chris and his HIN number. See these comments.
http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...icle_id=95

And so far all 1985 models have the bow locker handle pulls in the rear.

ssmith,

Thanks for the input.
Someone must have added the locker hinges but they were not factory installed until mid 1988.

You seem to be missing some letters in your HIN number though.

The first letter should be a B for Boston....
And you are missing an A between the number 1 an the M.
So, your HIN number should be this:
BWC7331AM84J

Joe,

I know you were collecting side rail lengths as well i believe. My 1982 18 Newport has the 69 inch side rails. The difference between outrage and newport seems to be placement. The three Newports I have seen so far all had the 69 rails that attached to the fiberglass in front of where the gunnels start. Just and FYi

There aren't many Newport 18's around.

I will keep a note about you reporting that the Newport 18' has 69 inch side rails.
This is probably due to the fact that the Side Rails were standard on this model and the bow rails were an option...

The Outrage 22' has 62 inch side rails.
The Outrage 18' has 55 inch side rails (still investigating)

Thanks for the report.
