I own a 1989 Outrage Cuddy 22. It is rated for a maximum 240 HP. I am looking into buying a new engine for her. Any suggestions on what would be the perfect engine for this boat?
I was thinking about an E-TEC, a Yamaha HPDI, or a four stroke Yamaha. I am just worried if I were to get a four stroke it may be a little heavy.
Whats the best deal out there? Thanks!

Also what are your needs/use? Fuel economy, performance, top speed, low end?

I am re-powering my 22 center console with a 225 4 stroke Yamaha. It should be ready for the weekend, I will let you know my thoughts.
Looking at the weights in the chart above, I really don't think 50 or so pounds will be that big of a concern. These boats can also be rigged with twin engines. That's got to be heavier than a single motor.

The Outrage has a yamaha 225 hp on her right now. The top speed is great, but uses a lot of fuel. I would like something that is going to last and not use a ton of gas. Reliability is my biggest concern. Would a E TECH hold its value compared to a 4 stroke?

While I will defer to the others on brands and horsepower, I will recommend you survey your options for service in the area.
While all brands have their advantages, if the closest certified mechanic is 40 miles away, that should be factored in.

I have a '07 200 HO Etex, it's the bigger 3.3L block. Plenty of power and an all around great engine. Weighs 524 Lbs vs the 450 of the old 225 looper, and with an extra battery back there, I do notice the added weight.
For better fuel economy, you may want to consider the 2.6L Etec, 150-200 HP. Lighter engines at 427 Lbs but still plenty of mid-range torque. Also, the 150 Yamaha 4S at 466 lbs is an option. Members have both on their 22's and seem very happy with the engine perfornance and fuel economy.

If you are going to water ski lean towards a Two-Stroke for out of the whole performance. If not I like the 4 cyl Verado 200. Two less cylinders to fuel.

My suggestion is go with the CLOSEST dealer that you have the best relationship with. Most of the engines produced today are good & reliable.
