I don't know if we shun people like this, but I have a co-worker that asked me to seek advice on whalercentral for a non whaler boat. I know what you guys are thinking, why am I friends with a non whaler boat owner? He's a good guy; he just doesn't have good taste in boats.

Anyway, he has an old galvanized trailer that he wants to paint black. He came over when I was painting the bottom of my whaler and noticed that I got some paint on the trailer. He asked about using bottom paint. I don't know about that.

I suggested he get the trailer rhino coated if anything. Can anyone help me guide this poor lost whalerless soul in the right direction? Thanks guys.

The key here is OLD galvanized trailer. Why not paint it. A few years ago I painted my non galvanized steel bass boat trailer. I sprayed on a coat of primer, and then a top coat of Rustoleum Hammered Finish enamel from Home Depot. Available in quarts gallons and spray rattle cans. The rattle finish cans would be good for touch up. This paint lasts for years, and for some reason holds back rust, and can be painted over rust, but I would touch up the rust spots first or prime the trailer. I have used this product for many years on exterior metal things.

Don`t berate the guy because he doesn't own a Whaler, there are many good boats out there, and many bad ones, and people with different tastes. To each his own.

Binkie:

My co-worker has become more of an old friend here lately. We love to bust each other's chops a little. He actually has an old Terry bass boat--stick steer just like my Dad had when I was a kid. I have always known it to be the "Suicide Stick." He mocks me and says that if Boston Whaler put their logo on boxers, then I would have 7 pairs!

Anyway, thanks for the information. I'll pass it on. Still, has anyone heard of rhino coating galvanized trailers? I'm just curious. My father has a Skeeter bass boat. It came with a rhino coated trailer, but he doesn't know if it is galvanized beneath. Thanks.

How about powder coating? I don't know how it works over galvanized, but a quick call to the powder coating shop would answer that. These guys have big ovens and your buddy would probably get the trailer back the same day he took it in. From what I have heard its a very tough coat.

Nick one thing I would do before painting Is spray it with ChemPrime. I found this product when I lived in Covington I use it now any time I paint anything ferrous that is outside. It is a treatment that is rich in zinc. It is made in New Orleans for the offshore platforms. I first found It at Poole Lumber in Covington(1993) . Easy to apply can be sprayed on with a trigger sprayer. Red Sky at Night - Bob

You guys ever hear of Hammerite? Very little prep work involved and will stick to almost anything, even rust.

I would like to second the Rustoleum Hammered Finish. The silver finish looks very close to galvanized. That is unless he really wants it black to match his boat. AT any rate If the galvanized finish is old and has long lost its shiny slick finish anything will stick to it just like painting regular steel trailer.

Thanks guys.

I just got off the phone with my trailer painting friend. I gave him all of your suggestions. I will let you guys know how the project turns out.

Bob, I was just at Poole Lumber today--twice! I'll look for the product and get it for my bud, if he decides to go through with the trailer painting.

I may be wrong. But painting over galvanized is not recomended. You may have to remove the galvanized coating first before paining with rustolem. If you do this use a mask. Check a local dealer. Hammered Rustolem works very good.

Use POR 15, (paint over rust) It does not have to be rusty. This stuff sticks to everything. Clothes, skin and trailers. Read the instructions. You do not want to get it on your skin. It works very good. I painted my galvanized magic tilt trailer and no more rust and it is a black trailer now. Auto body supply shops carry it. A quart did the whole trailer.

Craig Cook. I read your post a few times and then refered to the other posts on this thread and I am having a hard time following what you wrote.

Oh, BTW, Welcome to Whaler Central.

Same here. The thread is about fixing up an old trailer. Since when is refurbishing an old trailer "turning a lump of coal into a diamond"? All the guy wants to do is keep his trailer from rusting out from under the boat.

Sheesh.

nvacarro, I'm just finishing up painting truck bed liner on an old painted cargo rack for my pickup. Seems like tough stuff and sticks like stink on ####. Expensive though - $22/quart or $68/gallon.

Hey everyone:

Craig Cook's comments don't need explanation. He is my wife's father and obviously is very bored and has a great deal of free time.

You know what they say about opinions...

Does he have Alzheimer's? Do you get along with this guy? Lol.

I think that this thread should be sunken in deep water ...

As far as painting the trailer get a brush and some rust resistant paint and have at it...

just my two cents ...
