Just wanted to say hello to all.
My journey began only 8+ months ago......
Got lucky, met my wife...
More luck, found a small house on the Mill River - 100' frontage.
Max luck, got married at the new house on the river.
Even more, we bought a 1982 Newport 17', Evinrude 115 1982.
A little less, Found out the motor is actually a 1979 (model 11599R)
More, found out motor has low hours for it's age (exactly how many we don't know)
More still, my wife grew up with whalers...
So, there it is. I'm becoming a boater/whaler. Glad to have found this site.
Boat is in great condition. Needs cleaning up, bottom scraped and painted. Motor starts right up, runs strong and smooth. Will have it checked out. Electrical needs looking at - there's a morass of wires under the console... tilt gauge not working, lights not working, bilge pump not working. Everything else seems ok. Seats in good shape. Want to put a seat in stern. Make my own from teak/mahogany and put cushions on it, maybe.
Anyway, hello all. Looking forward to this - and I'm sure I'll be asking a zillion questions. :)

Welcome-Congrats on finding a Newport - I have an '81. I bought it about 3 years ago and love it - My wife and myself are slowly restoring it. Not going tobe 100% original but nearly so-There will be very little differnce just little things. My rubrail was faded to a light pink-yesterday I repalce it with a nice in great condition used one. It looks great-that is one of the things that I liked about the Newport is the red rubrail-adds a bit of spice.
Multiple congratsonteh wife - My wife and I are celebrating our 34th anniversary on Sunday with some other whaler owning friends (Montauk) who are celebrating their 40th. We were married June 7th and they June 20th-
BY the way show us some pix - I need to post some pix as well
