Hello Folks,
I am in the process of totally restoring a 1987 Outrage 22 with pulpit, superconsole and T-top. The boat currently has a 1987 225 hp Johnson as power which I am going to sell for parts or ? My thoughts are to re-power with a Yamaha 225 4-stroke possibly with a 9.9 hp or T-8 kicker (as a get-home and trolling motor). My question - is the added weight of the 4 stroke and the kicker too much; should I consider moving down to a 150 hp engine as the Yamaha 150 hp weighs just about the same as the Johnson 225 2-stroke? Given the weight increase with the 225 Yamaha, should the batteries be situated inside the console to help distribute weight more evenly or can they still be mounted near the aft splash well on either side? Any help from others having gone through this assessment process would be a great help. I am looking for some direction.

Hi Joe,
We have an '83 22 with a super console and T-top that we repowered last summer with an Etec 200 HO. Boat originally had the same engine you do now, '87 225 Johnson, which weighs 450 lbs if memory serves? The Etec is 524 lbs and we also added a second battery in the stern, so we're probably in the ballpark of where you'd be if you go with the Yamaha 4s.
I'm about to move batteries and oil tank forward as I need to get the stern to sit a little higher, but our hull sat a bit low to start with. Do you know your draft at the stern with the current engine? Also, what kind of boating will you be doing and loads will you normally be carrying?
BTW, hope you're taking lots of pic's of your restoration and will post them as it progresses!

I just restored my 25 outrage completely and did alot of research and found the ETECS were the way to go for me they are so economical quiet and powerful...good luck with your choice...here is a site of my renovation if your interested http://s536.photobucket.com/albums/ff326/romd133/whaler%20project/

Ihave a 1988 22ft outrage that was originally powered with a 225 Johnson . Several months ago I repowered the boat with a 225 hp Yamaha four stroke. I had a choice between the E-tec or Yamaha four stroke and my dealer( a friend) recommended the Yamaha and I have been extremely pleased. I recently went offshore fishing for seven hours(thirty-three gallons)

Joe, i have a 22 ft 88 center con, with a 225 2006 E-Tec on it. I'm not knocking the Yahmies at all, i just know how economical fuel and oil the E-tecs are, besides being faster then hell. Lot of good choices out there and i would definately look at the most advantagous warsntees.
