Hey guys:

I haven't heard back from Jeff about the desert tan bottom paint. I made some calls today and didn't have any luck. I need some advice. If I paint the bottom, what color would you guys go with? My boat doesn't stay in the water; it is trailered.

I stopped in at West Marine today. Is there some specific color that was painted on the bottoms of the 80's model Montauks or am I overthinking this? What is left on my boat from the previous owner is so nasty and funky, I can't tell what color it ever was. I was thinking of just going with black if I couldn't find that custom desert tan. Has anyone done red or is that a bad idea?

I would appreciate it if you guys could send me in the right direction. I am new to this bottom paint deal.

I don't think any ever came from the factory with byouottom paint on them so there would be no norm as to color. It's a matter of personal taste as to the color you choose. I used black on mine and liked the way it turnde out

I would avoid the bottom paint if the boat is not staying in the water. Use some other type of paint that would match the hull better. I think I have a picture in my personal page of my 18' outrage with red bottom paint, that is how the boat came when I bought her. Maybe you could get a gallon of interlux perfection and role the bottom ?? I am not sure if that paint can be tinted.

I use Blue interlux bottom paint, I moor my boat so I NEED it, if you don't keep your boat in the water, you don't need bottom anti-fouling paint. I had a neighbor that trailered his boat, he painted the bottom with anti-fouling paint just to make it look "Neat" over the old paint that was on there.

I'm in the same situation as your neighbor. This is just to make the boat look neat. I have tried and tried and I cannot get all of the old paint off. I've tried different removers and even oven cleaner. I still can't get it all. That is why I have just decided to paint the bottom.

Removing bottom paint is near impossible (for me) in the driveway. Thank God that they came out with "Ablative" bottom paint (wears off during the season). I tried removal as well and abandoned the idea because, I was cutting into the Gel-Coat. I figured that "Too much paint" is better than hull "Damage".

Mine had dark brown when I bought it. It still looks fine. Doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, to me anyway. You don't see the paint when you're boating anyway, right?

The paint I have on my Outrage was custom made at a local manufacture. I can still get it however, I can not ship it these days due to the restrictions on shipping liquids. I am willing to give you a hand in getting it however, it is the getting to you that my be a problem.

If you have to go with an off the shelf paint the interlux Shark white is a good color for whalers. It is not a perfect match to the tan but, still looks "hidden."

Thanks for responding. I appreciate you offering to help. I'm thinking of just looking at the shark white like you suggested since shipping would indeed be a problem.

I'm driving myself crazy about this. I just want to get it right so to speak. I've put some much effort into the boat that I don't want to cut any corners. So many site members, including yourself, have displayed beautiful craftsmanship that its inspiring.

Where would I find the Interlux shark white?

You should be able to get it at any good marine shop.

The paint I used was a custom mixed Sea Hawk AF-33 paint but they do have Shark White as well in the Biocop line.

I know some have had mixed success with taking a gallon of white base of Interlux bottom paint in white into a paint store to have them add tints to your paint to get the desert tan color. It usually involves some hassles to get another shop to mix a paint that you brought in.

I created "Desert Tan" bottom paint by using a gallon of white Pettit Vivid and adding pigments from a Benjamin Moore paint store to color it. I used the pigment formula for one gallon of "Clay Beige", Benjamin Moore color code OC-11. They charged me about three dollars.

I remember looking at that picture last year and I'll have to say, that is an amazing job of matching paint.
