I've got a traditional danforth anchor that is a real pain to store on my classic montauk. The shaft is too long for it to fit in the bow locker. It barely fits in the console at an angle but that's where it is right now. This boat is primarily used along the Texas coast.

I was wondering what others thought would be the best way to store this thing. I've considered purchasing a bag of some sort, getting a milk crate, and placing chaulks on the bow locker. I've also considered rail mounting but I'd rather not put that kind of weight on the rail it at all possible.

Any suggestions?

Take a look at my personal page. My boat came with anchor attached to rail and it works well and does not seem to add and stress to the railing either

I see... do you know what kind of bracket is holding it up? I have read that some people are doing that way and you are obvious proof of that. I have also see various types of rail brackets. So, do you remove it when going through rough chop? I'd still prefer to avoid rail mounting if possible but it may be a valid option.

Maybe a bucket, with notches routed out of the lip?

That bracket is designed for and to hold the Danforth anchor through all kinds of sea conditions. I have used them in the past and found them to be adequate in all kinds of condtions.

Just slide it *under* the console, not inside the console. It will stay there.

Get a smaller anchor? I have a 9# Danforth I used to park my 30' sailboat on overnight trips. If it's good enough to hold that boat in 50mph winds, it will hold a Montauk in anything. It fits in my locker just fine.

I went down 1 anchor size as well for my boat (15' sport),it's at the limit for the smaller Danforth but, it hold's well. I wrap a few winding's of electrical tape on the "rod" end's so it wont scratch the sides of the bow locker when it bounces in storage.

it is very easy to build a wooden bracket that will hold your anchor inside the bow locker. these brackets are siliconed to the walls (no screws). Not a single part of the anchor touches the locker. i tried the padding and tape but i found this simple design works really well.

Thanks for all of the great ideas. I took the boat out yesterday and tried out the under the console method. It actually worked pretty good in that spot. I haven't checked to see if I can make a bracket like Jorders yet but I'm going to play around with it and see if I can make that work. I really like that idea.

I looked and I can not find the name, but I purchased a small one made out of stainless, and bronze. Very heavy but small... They are built in Tampa

ossnap, if you want to make a plate to hold your anchor in your forward compartment it is fairly easy. i took a piece of mohogany and mitered the sides to the slope of the interior of the locker. i think that it was 10 degrees by 42 1/2 degrees but you should check it youself. i laminated other boards to this one to custom fit the anchor and siliconed it in place after putting on marine grade varnish. i will be glad to check any dimensions for you if you need for me to. john.
