Hello.
I don't have a tach on my boat for my 1993 40hp Yamaha outboard and would like to install one. I'm using the Yamaha 703 series remote control without power trim. Can I use any tach for this motor? Also, how do I install it once I get a tach?
I appreciate your time.
Thanks.

Cliff,
I would buy an OEM Yamaha tach.
Price them at a dealer and then look on eBay etc...

Cliff -
On my Montauk (with a '87 90 hp) I had this tach. Comes with oil level indicator. Model # is 6Y5-83540-05-00
There is also a version without the oil indicator. Model # is 6Y5-83540-14-00
For reference -
Yamaha Gauge Page
There are dozens of versions of classic Yamaha gauges so be careful you get the right one.
I think you will need the main gauge wiring harness as well.

Thanks Phil and Joe, I appreciate it. I was kind of hoping to be able to use a a similar brand of tach that I have used for my speedometer so they match on my console. If using a Yamaha tach is the only way to go, I guess I will have to go with mis-matched gauges.

It's not the only way to go. Just the easiest.
What brand of Speedometer do you have?
Check to see what they have available for a tach that will work on a Yamaha motor.

Thanks Joe. I'm using a Faria speedometer with a tan faceplate. The color matches the newly rebuilt console and Tiger oak instrument panel perfectly. I'll research Faria and see what they have to say about the Yamaha coupling up with a Faria tach.
