Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: E-TEC Made the Cut!!!

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the E-TEC vs. Yamaha thread-I began a new thread to try to be sure that it was looked at for what it is-

I have ordered a 2010 90 HP E-TEC. It is the salt water version, therefore it is white and has the all important decals-so now I have no fears - no flushing required the white paint and decals provide and effective force field to stem the evils of the marine environment :>)

I ordered through Carter's Outboard Marine in Adel Georgia. They are right off 75 between Tifton and Valdosta. Their total cost is $7280 all rigged with binnacle control, system check gauge and all cabling, oil, 5 year warranty, aluminum prop (I will pay to upgrade to an SS model) etc. They are giving me $600 for my old Outboard so the float out price is $6680 + tax

They are a 2nd generation Marine shop and have been there for 40 years and seem to be very honest and interested in doing a good job-Everything I talked about with them re. no new transom holes, backing plates, large bearing washers, sawing and/or bending washers if they set up on a slope or whatever they are fine with.

He has ordered it and it should arrive May 4th and he should have it complete by May 5th-6th.

Hopefully all goes well-I have confidence in Darron Carter-He strikes me as being able to take the family store for another 40 years-They don't have any large facility, no fancy bells and whistles-strictly mom and pop but they appear to mean business.

Thanks again to all who took the time to view the thread and post their comments-They was very helpful

A special thx to Joe Kriz for hosting such a wonderful site for Whaler Enthusiasts-I think I am finally understanding ing the breadth of what is available here and it is awesome-Thanks Joe

Great to hear!

I know that it is a good feeling when you finally pull the trigger after much consideration. Thank you for sharing your experience with Carter's; I will pass the information along to others in the area.

I look forward to seeing you on the water.

Best of luck with you new ETEC, and i know you will enjoy it. :D I am curious though of your statement about no flushing. I have a white salt water version and its part of my routine to throughly flush it after use, and had not heard that is was not a requirement. Actually, one of the members gave me a ref for a quick disconnect set up and it works great, without the engine even running as its not necessary. Now, I would think regardless of being a salt water series, you still would not want salt water to dry in your water passage ways as it (to me anyway) would eventually build up and cut off your water flow. That said, i would leave it to the site experts to give their advise.

Congradulations and I can gurantee you that you will have no regrets! I am as curious as Duf about the no flush though.........Even though you don't have to do the conventional run the motor with flaps on it, I would still connect the hose to the flush inlet and rinse the system each time I pulled it out of the water...........It sure can't hurt...........Keep us posted as to how much you like it

Sorry DUF and ioptfm - I apologize for the comment re. No Flush. It was meant tongue and cheek in that the white paint and decals made that much difference-Definitely not!!!-Let me know what techniques you would recommend re the quick disconnect w/o the motor running

You simply connect a water hose to the flush inlet and let her rip! Just flush it out for a few minutes and you're good to go

However, BIG WARNING HERE! be very careful to replace the fitting when (at least on my motor) you removed the exterior fitting to insert the hose. You must make sure the O ring is correctly seated. if not you will end up like i was, having overtemp issues. It was all due to the o-ring not being seated properly and it caused me fits.
Thats why a member (i can look him up if you need it) who was very knowledgeable told me about a quick disconnect for my motor you replace the fitting with. That way when you are done running the boat, you simply place your hose with the female end onto the male end fitting and turn on the hose. When your done rinsing (i usually run mine, eng off for about 10 mins while i'm tyding up the boat) you just disconnect the quick release, and your done, without messing with any fittings, nor O-rings. My kit cost about $20 and was well worth it!!

I looked up the old post that talks about the fitting and warning and reposted it. Its titled "problems with my E-TEC, tell me its not true" its just below your thread. Here's the main part of it though.

Duf,

You can install the Evinrude #775385 quick disconnect flusher and save yourself taking the tell-tale fitiing off every time you want to flush the motor. The kit includes a fitting that stays screwed into your engine and a quick-disconnect fitting that you put on your hose, then you clip them together like an air-hose fitting, snap on, snap off. It is specially designed for your motor, do not try to use a hardware store quick-disconnect fitting.

For others reading this thread, the #775385 quick disconnect flusher kit is ONLY for the big block E-TEC motors and older engines with the removable tell-tale for flushing.

It is NOT for the inline and 60 ° E-TECs as they have a different plumbing system and this kit will cause an EMM overheat problem.

Did I mention that this kit is NOT for the 2 or 3 cylinder E-TEC motors or the 2.6L 60° E-TEC engines?

So, if this is ref your motor, do not use the same type fitting i am.

I use a standard garden hose quick disconnect on my 175HP and have had no issues. the larger HP flush different. My dealer uses muffs when he works on the boat, just easier to switch back and forth between all the boats

Thanks for the ideas - I have been using muffs on my present engine-I will have to see what I can do similar to that on this 90 inline 3 cyl..

Congrats on the new motor, I got quoted a heck of a lot more here in California for a 90, close to 10K!

Needless to say the 88SPL still sits back there. I'm happy with it at that curernt price!

MR T Just thinking-perhaps there would be a way to order one from this dealer in GA and have it shipped to you. You could then rig it yourself or have someone do it for you in California. It could even possibly be direct shipped to you although I understand it needs to be shipped to a dealer. If so it would come to Carter for example and it would already be crated should be no problem for him to have a shipper pick itup and take it on to you thus filling the req of it being shipped to a dealer initially.

Again just a thought but there could be some good savings realized-

Well-That day has finally come-I picked the Newport/New Outboard (E-TEC) up from Carter Outboard Marine in Adel, GA on Friday. The Wife and I took it for a bit of a splash in the late afternoon and then headed home to Athens, GA.

The E_TEC is running real nice-Great feeling of confidence and all-visions of Sea-Tow are no longer dancing the anticipatory jig in my minds eye. I have a SS prop-don't know th pitch yet-forgot to ask:>) I guess I was too excited to remember.

Kicked it up a bit but got the look from my better half so I pulled back a bit - long drive home :>)

I am now doing some brightwork/upholstery,fiberglass cleaning/ rubrail replacing, et al on her. It will take a while to get it all done but it is moving along nicely.

That sharp E-TEC really shows what else I need to be working on.

Congratulations on getting the new motor and the maiden voyage.......If you look on the prop it should have the size and pitch written or embossed on it..............

Congrats!! feels good doesn't it. Yes it will show what needs doing as mine did when I got her home but, thats the joy of it. What oil setting did you get?? XD100, XD50?? I had it set for XD 100 and have been very pleased with the useage or lack of so to speak. Mine is a 2007 150 etec saltwater edition as well. Pushes the 19 outrage, at 3300 rpm, arround 30 mph. ENJOY!!!:D

Funny you mention oil usage or lack of usage........When I got mine I actually called the dealer to see if there was a hidden resorvoir somewhere in that it appeared mine was using any oil at all! Made me kind of nervous thinking that I was missing something somewhere! :)
