Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: 13 FT Whaler - Replacing Steering Cable

Hi Guys,

I need some advice. My friend has a 1968 13 ft Whaler with the old cable steering that needs to be replaced. Does Teleflex make a system that fits/works on a 13? Has anyone done that type of conversion from the old cable style to Teleflex?

Thanks in advance.

Bob

Hi John,

Thanks your reply, what this 13 footer has is a traditional side console, do they make a telflex system that will make the tight radius bends at the helm and stern corner? Also is there enough room to mount
the bracket for the stern tube mounting bracket and will the "throw" be enough for steering or will the turn radius be increased?

Beautiful job you did on your center console.

Thanks
Bob

Bob,

You'll have to install a "stand off" bracket for your steering tube if you're using a 15" shaft motor and have not changed your transom from a 15" to a 20" transom.

I think the steering tube on my 13' is about 11' long. You will not be able to make sharp bends in the cable so plan accordingly. The cable is flexible though and you can make it work with relative ease to function properly.

You can bend the cable down to an 8 inch radius without any problems, it should sweep from the gunnel into the side console just fine. I have the full transom, so I am not sure what issues you will run into there...it looks like Cliff has you covered on that front though.

Cliff & John

Thanks your replies, I have to check the transom height as I think it is the 15 inch transom. Its all
original from 1968. Do you know what length cable is used?

Hey Bob.

I just went into the garage and measured my Teleflex cable. From end to end is 11 ft long. The external case is about 8 ft long, but the entire cable is 11ft.

If you have a 1968 model 13' boat and the transom has not been modified, you do have a 15 inch transom. So in order to install a teleflex steering you will need a stand-off bracket. If you want a picture of what one looks like, let me know and I'll take a snapshot of mine for ya.

Hope this helps.

I just replaced the Sport style helm with a more upright Super Sport helm on my 1986 13ft and had to replace the teleflex system as the cable was a foot short. I'm not sure the teleflex I took out was original but they make cables down to 8 feet so it shouldn't be a problem to put one in regardless of helm configuration.

Just FYI, the old one had a 9 foot teleflex cable and I put in at 10 foot. Around 169 bucks...just measure the length of the cable you need very carefully...can't bend it very much.

Thanks everyone for your replies,

I guess that I will be helping my friend convert from the old pulley sytem to a telflex helm.
Will let everyone know how it goes.........

Thanks again
Bob
