I have been a member for 2-3 years and have rarely posted. When I have I have received very good input. I live in Georgia and am the owner of a 1981 Newport in pretty good shape and slowly I am getting her in better shape. I am not very experienced with outboards, this being thefirst I have ever owned. It currently has a 1982 140 HP Evenrude-the original motor she was first commissioned with. The motor runs ok but I am thinking of repowering her with an ETEC or a Yamaha. I can purchase either of these engines and have them serviced in several locations. I will be using the boat in freshwater and in some of the brackish coastal creeks and rivers in Georgia. I have never purchased a new outboard before. Evenrude has just extended their 5 year warranty on the ETEC till June 30. I believe I can get a 2 year warranty on the Yamaha. Could I get some nonbiased, possibly current input on the pluses and minuses of these two engines. I would probably get either a 70/75 or a 90 2 stroke. I do not want the additional weight of a 4 stroke. Thanks for your help

Both engines are good.
It depends on if you want an environmentally friendly engine or not.

The old 2 strokes are not clean engines.
Here in California, we cannot buy the new Yamaha 2 strokes as they cannot be sold here due to their poor emissions.

From your choices above, I would buy the E-Tec 90 for that boat as it weighs the same as the 75 hp model.
See this chart for weight and CARB ratings. CARB3 rating is the best emissions for outboard motors at this time.

Thanks Joe-I had originally decided to purchase and Etec then someone told me about problems they know about with the Evinrude. I don't think they were current problems nonetheless he is in the service business and does not sell engines/bosts. He is reputable in this area. The warranty is a lot to think about-much longer than the Yamaha. I share your concerns about the environmental implications but must admit I thought the 2S Yamaha Midrange engines met the criteria set out for the EPA-I did not do any research though-I just made some assumptions probably not based on anything other than other assumptions which renders them of little value :>)

Most new engines today are reliable and work very well. With that said any outboard can have a couple bad apples. if the person who told you about the eTec issues doesn't sell boats or outboards then how did he know about issues? If he is a mechanic, perhaps he is not happy about being passed over for Evinrude repair business? I had a reputable BW dealer, tell me how bad the etec's were and how much all the coasties hated theirs. seems he was really sore about loosing the merc business and when I ask the coasties the next time I saw them, they love their etec's, especially the ones powering their 19 justice.

Interview both the Yahama and Evinrude dealers in your area, as those are the folks who will fix any new outboard you purchase. Pick the one that seems to give you the straight up talk and doesn't BS around and has service hours that fit your schedule. Twice, I have taken my etec to my dealer, and both times he had me drive the boat down (60 miles) and dropped everything to fix the issue on the spot. he didn't even get my sale as I purchased the engine thru another dealer that has since lost the Evinrude brand. that is a dealer who treats his customers right and I wish I had gone thru him the first time.

I don't know what state you live in but here in California some of our lakes have restrictions on outboard motors.
Quite a few of our bodies of waters only allow CARB3 rated outboards.
How many more of California's waterways are going to adopt these ratings?

When will your state adopt some of these restrictions on using older technology outboard motors?

If you buy an older technology 2 stroke today, what if next year your favorite lake or waterway will NOT let you launch your motor in their water. Where will you be then? Up the creek without a paddle.

That is why I recommend buying the cleanest engine available for sale TODAY.....
We have no other choice in California when buying new motors now.
We can only buy the new clean 2 stroke engines from Evinrude, some Mercs, and some larger Yamaha's, and then of course the heavier 4 strokes.
If buying a 4 stroke, I would also make sure it is CARB3 rated rather than CARB2 rated.
The cleaner the better and CARB3 rated is the best rating at this time.

I plan on buying an E-Tec when it becomes time.

Thanks to Kamie and Joe for taking the time to reply-Looks like I am back to the E-TEC again-I have been thinking about this decision for several months now and I have given myself until next week to finalize it. The E-Tec has the best combination of price and warranty particularly now that they have just raised the warranty from 3 years to 5 years until June 30. I need to confirm the details of the additional 2 year warranty and what if any restrictions there are but on the face of it it sounds great. I have still got to check with a couple other dealers regarding price on both the Yamahas and the E-TECS-I have my work cut out for me over the next few days-The wifey is in agreement so I am covered there-Thats always a good thing.

Yamaha has been making that 2 stoke 90 for 25 years. It's a great proven motor. I unbolted the Merc of my 2008 Montauk and got that 2 stroke 90 Yamaha, and it's fabulous. As I have had no ETec experience, my opinion is indeed biased, but Yamaha rules the salt water world...at least in the Keys where we boat, and that separates the men from the boys. FYI, I didn't see one ETec last time I was in Florida in January. Yamaha's first, Honda 2nd, and a few Mercs.

Also, my apologies to Joe in California, what a horrible thought that I couldn't take my outboard to the body of water of MY choice....

I don't own an E-tec, I have a reg. 2-stroke, I remember hearing about the "E-tec" and asked my dealer "Am I getting one" after I laid out the "Cabbage", he turned and snapped "NO" ! :o I REALLY wanted an E-tec but, didn't have the "Scratch". I looked at "Yammi", and they ran "Strong". We have a large "Yammi" dealer" here, as well as a large "Evinrude" Dealer, everytime I brought up the "Service" word to a "Yammi" owner, a lip got raised and and Eye roll followed it, indicating that they did NOT like that "particular Dealer" for service, so I went to "Evinrude" for the better service in this area (open Sunday's). I'm sure their are good Yammi "Dealer's" out there, just not here.

I have an 2008 50hp E-TEC (got the 5-yr. warrenty) and could not be happier. I grew up with conventional 2-strokes Evinrudes and Mercs from the 60's70's and 80's, (my last was an 1982 175 Evinrude with the econ-o-mix oil injection) I ran that motor hard and it was great, sold it in 1995, since then I have had two boats since with big block i/o's and this is the first outboard I have had in 13 yrs. I have to tell you, the don't pump the bulb, hit the key and it fires right off is awesome, It self winterizes, uses hardly any oil (XD-100) no smoke what so ever, this thing is the the real deal. You might want to look at www.etecownersgroup.com. Several dealers on the board as well, good luck with your decision!

Joe I have received theRod Holder drawing-Is this intended to be 4 sided? Is the right hand board to be on the left as well with the snaps facing out so they will be inline with the snaps on the cushions? Who makes these cushions that will mate to this rodholder? Are the 1" radius holes on a slight slope from top to bottom so the rod holders will angle a bit toward the bow ?

I figured out the 1st part of my question-It is just 2 sided (top and bottom that is) ALl I need to know is whether or not the 1" radius' are in line or sloping as I asked earlier

I have an '07 Etec 200 HO and one of the great things about it, as Will says, is there's no fast idle (except to winterize) and no choke because they're simply not needed. Stone cold or fully warmed up, a simple turn of the key and it fires right up and idles rock steady. Throttle response is instantaneous and strong. The XD-100 oil does burn smoke free, and it's a great feeling running one of, if not the cleanest engines produced today.

Thanks for your comments Derwd24-I think I would feel good about getting one as well. I have found some good buys out there in both the Yamaha and the 90 E-TEC. I am kinda leaning toward the E-TEC for a host of reasons, not the least of which is the 5 year warranty and cleaner burning. I could save some bucks on the Yamaha but not sure it would be wise in the long run to settle for a shorter warranty.

have you seen the evinrude web site. they do all these side by side comparisons of yammi and the etec and the e tec kicks its butt. in one the they time them stern to stern and the e tec pulls the yammi sam horsepower underwater
