1994 Montauk/ Yamaha 70 / Desert Tan.
I bought it off of a great guy. themclos, (Dan). I am new to used boats, somewehat. A few cosmetic questions please?
1) I see some stern seats with multiple fold down leg supports underneath. I think this boat could benefit from that. It has only one, and so I'd like to add these. where do I get them? What are the parts called?
2) Oxiclean helped with the cushions. Any thoughts on how to make them even better?
3) The resin (I think) Z legs are almost bleached white, with black spots on them. Thoughts on cleaning them? Or even painting them?

Regarding the Z legs, the 90's versions came in whlte. Painting has been discussed and is a tricky proposition. Will not last very long.
Try bleaching with a good scrub (remove from boat) to get at the mold, wet sanding and Penetrol.

Sal,
You will quickly find the enjoyment factor to"upkeep" ratio for the Montauk to be very high. One weekend in the spring detailing the boat has her shape for the season. A washdown after use keeps her looking great, and a post season detailing completes the package. Projects, such as cleaning up the wiring, take extra time. While there is no denying the beautiful look of wood on the older models, I think you will appreciate the ease of maintenance when no wood is present. Perhaps we will both be able to upgrade to wood featuring models in the future.
In fact, my girls are insisting that our next Whaler have wood. We'll see what happens there.
Best of luck with the Mary Alice VI. I am sure she will provide you and your family with as many hours of pleasure as she provide to mine. It is comforting to know she has moved on to a family that will provide her with the care these boats deserve. It takes some of the sting out of letting her go.
Wish me luck in my search for our next Whaler. With any luck, we'll be back on the water before too long.
