I just purchased a 2004 19cc nantucket with the 115hp merc 4 stroke and unfortunately it didnt come with any manuals. What maintenace should I do throughout the season to keep thinks running smoothly? I have been told to spray the inside of motor with CRC OR quicksilver rust inhibitor once a month, also to change the annodes once a season, also put some grease on the steering arm on the outboard once a month. To do this I was told to turn the engine all the way so the arm is fully exposed and then to grease it up once a month. Does that sound like all the required maintenace that should be done? I know about all the winterizing procedures that are needed. I am talking about maintenace during the season. I run the boat in the chesapeake bay and rivers which are brackish water.

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan. I am sure you have this planned also but I change my engine oil and filter plus the foot oil every year(fall for some reason).FLushing the engine with fresh water after every outing in the salt. I know that alot of WD on the trailer is a plus as well. BG

Good chance that year was a Yamaha head bolted to merc lower unit... Seriously not kidding... Merc used Yamie 4 stroke for a few years until 2005/06. Check out the Yamaha parts diagrams online and compare with your merc. Could be a starting a point if you cant get a manual from mercury.

You should be able to order a manual from a Boston Whaler dealer.

If the 2004 is a "Merc-aha", the engine has very fine (small) pasages in the carburetors. If the boat sits for weeks at a time, a carburetor cleaning is recommended to prevent rough running. Make sure to use a fuel treatment.

Congratulation, you have a great engine and model.

Since the engine is new to you, I would suggest:

new plugs
fuel filter (under cover)
oil filter
oil and lower unit change
remove and grease prop shaft

You should not have to grease the steering more than once a year. See if the port side nut on the tube has a grease fitting. If not, install a steersman nut. See this photo for reference

You can use a mini grease gun (see below) found at an auto supply, Sears, Walmart or marine store for this fitting, in addition to the grease fittings on the engine bracket, cover hinges and trailer.

What Phil T says regarding the carbs is true. I have a 2005 90 hp four stroke also manufactured by Yamaha. Get a seperate fuel filter/water seperator installed and save yourself some headaches, not to mention $. As they say, don't ask me how I know.

I just wanted to point out that John's subject line included: "efi" EFI = Electronic Fuel Injection. No carbs. The 115 hp version of the Mercury and Yamaha 4-stroke never had carbs that I am aware of. Only the 75-100 hp versions. A quality external fuel/water filter is still a good idea though.

finally splashed boat today and what a great ride this boat has, could use a little more power but I am real happy with the way she handles. I didnt see a grease fitting for the steering but I was so excited I could have missed it. Does anyone else have a 2004 whaler with an 2004 115 efi 4 stroke mercury that knows wheteher it does or not? If it doesnt should I install one that does or just rub grease on the steering arm? Either way I cant wait to go rockfishing on the bay.......:D:D
