Hey all,

I'm in the process of getting my 1976 Montauk 17 back in like-new condition. Anyone know what size/make cooler seat to get, and where to get it?

Thanks,
Chris

A correct cooler seat for a Montauk consists of the following components:

- The cooler itself.

- The cleats the cooler is mounted on.

- The hooks that attach to the sides of the cooler and engage the bungee cords form the cleat.

- The cushion that sits atop the cooler.

The cooler that Whaler used back in 1976 was an Igloo Marine 84 quart cooler (which was renamed 86 quart just a few years later.) This cooler is no longer made but it descendant, the Igloo Marine 94 quart cooler is essentially the same but with a taller lid. These coolers can be bought for as little as $60 on sale though they usually cost considerably more.

The cleats can be made using the drawings in the downloads section:

The cooler hooks need to be ordered from a Whaler dealer. I get mine form Sue Lodel at Twin Cities Marine:

A perfect OE quality cushion can be ordered from Lois Hall:

Would this info apply to a '91 montauk as well!
Thanks for any advice Tom!

Danny - Yes.

If you have rod cushions, install the cooler so the hinges face forward. Since the cooler is a bit taller than the original, it is easier to open this way.
