What's everyone's thoughts on a 40 hp E-TEC, on a Sport 13?

Sounds awesome. Wish I had 5k give or take for a new one. I guess I'll stay with my '81 35 Johnson Seahorse for a while...*sigh*

I would go with the standard Yamaha 2 stroke....Go with the max hp rating. These motors are very light and run great and seem to be priced well.......I have heard the e tech dont take the salt water too well .....Yamaha gives you more HP for the Buck

I like the E-Tec, try and pick an engine manufacturer that has a part's place and support close to home, "Open Sunday's" is a Bonus !

Hi i think the 40 e-tec is a bit heavy for a 13...and if im not mistaking they only come in longshaft..
i would go with a yamaha 40 2-stroke...or a 50 2-stroke:D
the power and fuel economy on those yamie's are great!
my dad used to have a 55hp on my 13...it was a low flying airplane:D 48 mph:o

The 50 HP Yamaha cited above is a conventional two stroke, not a four stroke.

The Yamaha F40 four stroke weighs 214 pounds.

The Yamaha F50 four stroke weighs 237 pounds.

Yeah, I should have been more specific. The Yamaha 50 I referenced was a 2 stroke.

I don't know if you have a dealer nearby, but don't overlook the 40 Nissan/Tohatsu. Just over 200 lbs with t&t. I love mine. It runs great and really sips fuel.

I have a 2008 50hp E-TEC on a 1995 13 Dauntless, it is an awsome powerplant, I will say the 40,50, and 60 E-TEC's all weigh 240, (all same 2cyl block), the Yamaha does same you some weight, however, the don't pump the bulb, turn the key starting is really neat, the self winterizing thing is pretty cool as well, I have had mine one year and it has been flawless, good luck with your hunt!

I totally agree........The ETEC is awesome and the extra features and warranty are fantastic........In the ETEC owners manual it states that if the motor turns over more than 3 times then there is something wrong! I don't think mine has made more that one rev without firing right up!

Dang you guys make it hard to decide.

I am close to pulling the trigger on a Merc. 60 4S or an Evin. e-tec 60 for a 15' Sport.

Yamaha is NOT an option for me. Bad blood.

I have found that either way I go, I get to also buy an "adapter plate" as neither offers the old OMC "blind" mounting holes. I AM NOT drilling any more holes in my transom.

So many choices.:o

All motor decisions being equal I would say choose based on dealer support. Finnegan made a post earlier about a shootout that was done between several motors in a bass magazine. The Merc came out on top. I forget which HP it was. Could have been a 50, but I forget exactly, try searching that, or maybe someone can reference the actual article for us. I will try to find it in the mean time.

Good point, I should have mentioned that. The results really need some careful examination. Point is, in my opinion, a 50 is a 50 is a 50. If you can find a place to run WOT all the time it may be a concern, but otherwise, buy a make you have had good experience with from a local dealer who has treated you well for a price you can handle. It's really an older article now and the topic has been beaten to death in many different places, I did not want to take this thread in that direction...
