Hi all,
I'm getting ready to move my 1974 13. It has a 2004 bought new in 2006 merc 25 on it with about 40-50 hours on it. I have the option to put a 1985 yam/mariner 40 on it in its place as well. I don't have the controls for the 40 yet, but thats not too big of a deal. Would making the change make the boat more desirable? It seems to me the lower hp boats don't sell as quickly as the 40 hp boats in this model. What are your thoughts about value? Newer less desirable motor vs. older better hp motor? Am I wasting my time considering the change?

I think the biggest thing you need to weigh are the downfalls of trying to market with a motor that is 24 years old. I would think that someone would over look the smaller hp vs the age of the other motor..I personally would stay with the newer motor

If you derig the Mercury what would you do with it?

Personally I would rig the Yamaha and not take the deprecation hit on the newer mercury. Save it for another boat. Decent 13's with good older power sell quick in the mid-range of the price bracket. Older hulls at the higher end of the price bracket with newer power sit much longer. Unless the boat is a near perfect 1974 I would not sell it with the Merc.

I think you could offer the boat for sale with the buyer having the option to choose which motor he wants. That would open the deal up for both types of buyers.

I think a 40 hp engine is preferred by 13' buyers. Nothing against the Mercury.

While the 40 is a bit old, they are not hard to work on.

Thanks for the input. I kinda suspected it would be a wash. With 2 adults in the boat tubing isn't a problem. Water skiing is. As the kids grow the need for speed is growing as well, not to mention the need for more space in the boat! Thanks.
