Does anyone have this vintage Honda 90 mounted on their 17' Montauk. I have read all the articles about mounting then I measured my transom and bracket and now I am confused more than ever. My top mounting holes are 2 1/4" o/c down from transom not 1 7/8" and my bracket holes do not match drawings that I have found. The motor was mounted using the top and bottom of the 4 top holes and I would like to fix this. I have plugged the two lower holes then got to measuring and am now in a quandry. Thinking of plugging all the holes and starting over. Let me know if anyone has this motor already mounted or suggestions please.

You shouldn't have to change your upper holes even though they are 2 1/4 inches.

Look at the article about where the bottom holes should go but be careful.

Whoever mounted your engine did not use the lower bracket holes. It sounds like they used only the holes in the upper part of the bracket.

Joe, they did. I took pics with a tape measure next to them so everyone can see the dimensions. I will post them when I get home tonight. My transom top to bottom is 21.5" long. With a 20" shaft motor can I still raise it one or two holes? That would put my cavatation plate 2.25" or 3" above the bottom of the transom. I am worried about cavatation and loosing grip with the water. Just want to get it right while I am redoing. You know the saying. "Do it once, do it right"

I have a 85 montauk with a 1996 honda 90. All four holes are used and are the same as the 70hp johnson the honda replaced, The top hole bolts are mounted through the second hole down on the motor.

I assume that your 2 bottom bolts were not thru bolted. Correct?
They were lag bolts?
Or does the Honda have blind holes like the OMC motors as shown in the article?

I see they did not have any bolts in the lower mounting slots.
And the same question for you. Does the Honda have blind mounting holes in the engine bracket?

Your transom measures about 21-1/2" along its surface but is only 20" high, which is what counts.

Because the transom slopes backwards the distance along the transom's surface is greater that the vertical distance between keel and top of transom.

You motor should be mounted at least 3/4" above its lowest possible setting (one hole up) and could go as high as two holes up with the right propeller.

Joe, no it only has the 4 top holes then the bottom slots. As you can see in the picture of the bracket with the tape next to it the bottom slot is 7 1/4" down from the second hole. So per the drawing in the article that is going to put me right at the bottom of the slash well. I would love to move it up two holes but again I am worried about cavatation. Being that my top holes in the transom are @ 2 1/4" and not 1 7/8" I might be able to go up 2 holes. I'm not sure. Thinkin of taken the hoist out to the lake and running with 2 bolts and trying different heights before I commit to drilling. I am also running the stock prop and prop suggestions for this set up with the motor raised up would be appreciated. Thanks, Wayne

If you bolt the engine on with it sitting on the transom, the bolts would be in the second hole from the top. If you move the motor up, into the 4th hole, you should have clearance to drill the bottom set at the top of the slots.

I would hang the engine on the 4th hole and then measure the anti-cav plate distance above the bottom of the hull before drilling the bottom set.

As Tom said, you want the anti-cavitation plate to be at least 3/4 inch above the bottom.

Goudy, thanks for taking the time to take pics. That is the same set up as mine. Looks like you are in the second hole and the bottom bolts are at the very bottom of the splash well. It is definitly a tight fit. One question, where are your top holes at in relation to the top of the transom. Mine are at 2.25" down o/c, With that I am 3/8" lower than if they were at 1.875" o/c as the typical height. That would make my bottom bolts questionable. They are going in one way or another. Just debating plugging the tops as well and redrilling all 4 or maybe moving to the third hole. What is your top speed? What prop are you running? I am flipping her back over Friday morning to start sanding and buffing out the interior. I will take a very close look to see if I can mount it at the same points as yours with the top holes where they are now.

Sorry I could not be a little faster but I have been out of town for a few days. I measured my top hole which is approx 1 3/8" down on the outside transom. The same hole on the inside measures approx 1" down.

Goudy, wow yours does sit quite a bit higher than mine. With that set up I would be in the third hole on the top set. That would definitely make it no problem to hit the bottom holes. Last question, what prop are you running and how does she hold in rough conditions and high speed turning?
I just flipped her back over to prep the interior for the gel coat repairs. Looks like I am 3 to 4 weeks away from hanging the 90 back on. Yea!!!

Bottomfish, I had the same Honda BF 90 on a 1979 Montauk for two years mounted exactly like the person who just supplied you a photo. It performed great in San Francisco Bay chop and flat water. I had to tilt the motor up quite a lot to get any ventilation. It felt rock stable

Sounds great, the hull is in the shop getting sprayed this week. Should have her back in a week or two and it looks like up 1 hole and hit the lowers in the bottom of the splashwell. Thanks for the responses.
