Hello All,
I am restoring an '84 Outrage from the bare hull up. Many years of salt water had taken a toll on everything. I have reviewed many sites and a couple of boat shows to obtain advise on this repower. The boat was found with twin Johnson 110's, circa 1988. It was delivered from the dealer with a single 200 Evinrude.
I am chosing to go with a used 225 Evinrude Ocean Pro. (I'm an Evinrude guy).
The question is: in looking at several 22' Whalers her in the Kemah/Seabrook area of the middle Texas coast; almost every Whaler has a setback arrangement for the engine. A couple of WhalerDrives are visible, various setback brackets around 12"to 18" and several boats with 8"-10" jackplate arrangements.
Can someone who has run a 22 with and without a setback bracket steer me straight? Pun intended! The many articles that I have accessed all suggest that a 12"to 18" setback bracket will help top end speed, fuel economy (which is what I am after), and the attitude that a 22' will sit and plane at with a bracket. I am working the boat mainly offshore to thirty miles out in 2' to 3' seas for the most part. A couple of fishing guides running 25' Whalers are very hot on a setback bracket for "settling the boat" in chop and following seas.
I am looking at a bracket by Stainless Marine. Anyone have suggestions? Does anyone have an origninal setback bracket for sale? Single engine please.
I would prefer OEM if possible. Let me know.

Robert,
I have a 22 with the cut transom and an old 200 Suzuki. I am sorry, I can't comment on the transom or setback bracket. I have only had it off shore once since buying the boat. I really like the way it handles the way it is. That is not to say it may not be better with a set back bracket of some sort.

I have a 22' Outrage Whaler Drive. I recently added fixed jack plates to the twin 150's. I did that because the engines had 25" shafts and although they were mounted all the way up, they still looked a little low to me. Also, my boat porpoises fairly easily if I trim out much at all.
In your case, I would expect a setback bracket or jack plate to give a little better performance and fuel economy.
