my father bought a 17' Whaler HIN is 86952, was told it is a 1967 model Montauk, where can I get a picture of how it looked new?
has a center console in it now, were they available with a center console in '67?

I can tell you with 100% confidence it was not a "Montauk" because in 1967 there was no Montauk. What it was depends on what's in there now, is the center console wood? If it is then it could be the original, if not is it a whaler console, or an aftermarket one? If you have a wooden center console, what other parts are there? The 16/17 hulls were all the same, the interiors made the model. basically you have a 16/17 footer Photo's will help a lot. If you send your Stencil number to Chuck Bennett, he can tell you how the hull left Whaler and when.

17 footer is all you can tell until you get that number to Chuck Bennet. The hulls were all the same as Kamie said. The stencil number will tell how it was configured from the factory as far as interior goes... Nauset, Eastport, Cohasset, Sakonnet, (did I miss any?) etc.
Think of it like a car, there is say for example, Mustang, Mustang LX, Mustang GT or whatever. This is the same model, chassis, body but it is a different trim level. That is how the early 17 foot hull worked, one chassis, different trim levels so to speak.
