I need to install some through hulls, some above the waterline and others below.

I have heard that it is best if you make the through hull against the outmost layer of glass and leave some foam exposed. Similar to this:

i am not so sure about that. I have also heard that if you simply sandwhich the inner layer of gass and outer layer of glass that over time, the foam will compress and make the fittings loose.

Would it be better to put some wood in to sandwich against?

Can anyone tell me what the correct method is?
