Blue and black (the most common colors) look nice, but it sure makes an overturned boat difficult to find from a rescue helicopter. Try red or maroon (neither are great, but they are better than black and blue!). International orange would be great, but I'll admit it isn't very pleasing to the eye. Or, you could use blue or black from the waterline down about 1/3 of the way to the keel, and use a brighter color for the rest (the part that will only be seen if you capsize, but never when you are upright). I know it sounds ridiculous, but I'm a USCG pilot and the more you can do to help yourself before you get into a rough situation, the better!

Interesting thoughts on the capsize. To that point my robin egg interior wouldn't be much help either.

The hull will be 70's white.

If you want a bright color, try one of these:

But if you want the overturned hull to contrast against the water and not have the bottom paint stand out, use the White.

I actually think that the red looks quite decent on the Whaler. I have done it before with the interlux red, and I liked the result.

I like blue, and I like the idea of a red stripe (looks great) but, too much maint. with the stripe (for me). Your yellow or orange colored "cool looking" PFD that you picked out at the marine store (and always have on) will contrast vibrantly against the blue.

A Whaler purist would not put bottom paint on a Whaler. The contrasting colors typically spoil the fine lines of the hull and diminish its resale value.

HOWEVER, those who keep their boat in the water must have bottom paint.

Using a bottom paint that matches the hull color can achieve the best of both worlds, preserving the good looks of the hull and protecting it.

A Sakonnet has a white hull. White bottom paint is easy to find. Pettit Vivid comes in white.

Short of matching the hull color, black bottom paint has always looked the best to my eyes. It does not try to be anything but what it it, matches the striping on later model and holds its color in the water.

Red, and especially the typical blue bottom paint colors are the ugliest, relating to nothing on a Whaler.

"Yiger" makes a good point, It would'nt take much to put a sloppy yellow stripe or orange square on the bottom of the hull, (for those of us who must use bottom paint) nobody would see it until it was needed, or maybe bright "Hull" numbers on the bottom. We all know how hard it is to spot somebody in the water, these folk's are out looking for us , so it's the least we can do to help. I'm going to try it this season.

x2 - If I ever turn my boat over in the shop for repaint or maintenance I think I might just give it a skunk stripe.!
