I have found a 1987 Outrage 22 Cuddy. It has been traded in to a dealer for a newer boat. I stopped by the dealer yesterday and when I sighted down the waterline there is a very distinct "ripple" (with a vertical axis) on the port side, minimal on the starboard side.

Can anyone give me a an idea if this is going to be a structural problem? Could it have come out of the mold that way?

It has an early '90's 2 stroke Yamaha 200 and a 9.9 kicker. It looks to be in decent shape but has certainly been around the salt for some time. They want 15K for it. That seems a bit steep. Any input would be appreciated!

You can by a motor like that for 12-15 hundred , maybe less if much corrosion, and the kicker is worth about 4 hundred. As for the hull who knows without pictures. Why buy one with a defect, even if it is only cosmetic. Someday you will want to sell that boat, and it might be a deal breaker for a prospective buyer.

The ripple in the hull you describe is very common. It is a purely cosmetic defect caused by the foam core shrinking a little in the first few years of its life sucking the topsides back in with it. It did not come out of the mold that way.

The ripples, or puckering as it is sometimes called, was most common on early 1980s models with the 1981 Outrage 18 having the most severe cases.

I wouldn't worry about it. There is nothing you can do about it anyway.

For $15,000, in this market, that boat does not seem like much of a deal to me either but it may not be a bad deal. You;re never going to get a truly good deal from a dealer; they know what boats are worth. It's their job.

Yep!, that last photo is exactly what I saw, the salesman was "surprised" and said he didn't know they were there. It doesn't bother me but may be a way to get the boat for less... thanks for the input...Andrew
