Gentlemen:

When re-powering a "classic" Montauk with a Yamaha 60HP four stroke EFI, does one specify the "F" (standard) or "T" (high thrust) lower unit? The boat would be used for light fishing and cruising only. No water sports are in the picture. Two people is the standard crew with minimal gear.

With the Yamaha 60HP four stroke EFI, what would be the estimated cruise speed? Top speed is of little importance in Volusia County, Florida. The manatee, slow speed, and no wake zones are increasing in size and number while the speed limit on the open stretches is now limited to 25MPH.

My '63 Nauset is powered by a 60HP Suzuki 4stroke. It'll do 35 MPH WOT. I use it much the same as you have described, and personally don't see a need for the Heavy Duty lower end setup...

i just repowered my 1975 montauk with a yammie 60F. it's perfect for the magothy river (chesapeake bay tributary) where i use it 75-80% of the time. with me, my wife, two small kids, a cooler full of goodies and 12 gallons of gas, it planes quite easily at 3500-3600 rpms. i don't have a gps, so i'm not sure how fast i run at wot, but i feel it gives me all that i need around 4800...and there's plenty more if i want it.

I'd consider the high thrust version. Although it seems counter intuitive to use a motor designed for heavy loads on a small skiff, that is in fact what Whaler uses on the new Montauks. They do not do that randomly. They must have done some qualitative testing and determined it was a better choice.

I suggest you contact Whaler Customer Service and inquire about the suitability of either of those versions for your Montauk.

Would you mind providing specifics with regards to your F60? Through which of the top set of mounting holes is the engine bolted? What size is your propeller and which manufacturer did you select? What is your WOT RPM?

i'd be happy to get you some more details on my set up. don't know any of them off hand. i'll get back to you this weekend.

i do know i just went with the dealers rec for the prop...it a yamaha, but i don't remember the size.

i've only got 8 hours on it at this point and have not yet pushed it all the way to WOT. i was gonna wait until the 10-hour mark, but the manual says it's o.k. before 10 hours for short periods of time. we're planning a raft-up with friends this weekend and should be able to get some data for you.
