Hello to all,
I am new to the forum. I had a Montauk for the past ten years and I just bought a 1979 Outrage V20.
I want to know if I need a long shaft engine or an extra long and whether a 4-stroke Suzuki of 175 horsepower is a good choice.

Olivier,
Welcome and congratulations.
You will need an extra long shaft (25") outboard for the Outrage V20. The motor should be mounted at least two holes (1-1/2") up on the transom.
The four stroke Suzuki DF175 will be an excellent motor for that boat.

I have a 1979 v20 that I'm restoring.im almost to the point of re powering it .i want to put a 4 stroke on it but I've been told that most of the 4 strokes are to heavy for it.is that true? I don't want it to sit with the transom too low. Any suggestions on a good motor for that boat? I've been looking for a Yamaha f150 4 stroke but seems impossible to find

You haven't given us enough information on how or what you plan on doing with this new motor.
A new motor is a huge expense and is entirely up to the boat owner.
You need to look at what reputable dealers are near you.
Would you really want a Yamaha 150 that weighs more then a Suzuki 175?
Maybe you really don't need the extra 25 hp for what you want to do.
If you could go with less power and you have a Suzuki dealer near by you,
Suzuki 140A weighs 407 pounds.
Talk to your local dealers.
All motors today are good motors.
Can anyone of us get a lemon? Of course. Just like anything else we purchase.

For around 10.5K purchase price, you should look at the new Mercury 150 EFI 4-stroke. It is the biggest displacement of any, 3.0 liters, and the lightest in weight of all the 150 4-strokes. It's probably about a 170 HP engine at the prop. Your boat needs a 25" engine, and can easily handle the weight, since the boat was designed for 90 HP 20" twins, close to 550-600lb in weight.
For the ultimate in speed and if a 2-stroke would even be considered, look at the Mercury 175 Pro XS Optimax. Close to 200 HP and a real screamer. Price is about 11.5K, and it weighs about 20# less than the 4-stroke 150.

Bonjour Olivier et Hi folks, I'll offer my 2 cents. I went through this issue last year with my 1978 V20 and decided on the Etec 175 hp. Yes expensive but very pleased with the product. Top end is about 46 mph and fuel efficient. If I had the choice to do it again, I would still choose the Etec.

Thanks for the input I think I will look into the Suzuki 175 I definitely want a four stroke,I've had my share of 2 stokes and I want to go quiet this time around and I could use the extra space on the boat where the oil tank would be. I'm looking for something used I'm trying to keep the cost down I also have a 36' egg harbor that consumes a lot of time and money

I don't see the new E-Tec on his boat in his personal page.
Looks like the old 1981 Mercury.
The new 2 strokes are just as quiet and efficient as the new 4 strokes.
Do Not confuse the new 2 strokes with older 2 strokes.

You gents are correct, it's a pre-Etec pic and thanks for the compliments. And I would like to second Joe K's comments, these new 2 strokes are much quieter to the point where people now want to sit at the stern while under way! Also Bac79, I can pm you a few pics with the current set up including the oil tank should you wish.

Any input on a 2006 Honda 4 stroke?
