Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: question about 1986 11ft. sport

We are considering buying a 1986 11ft. sport for our kids (ages 8 and 11). It has an 8hp Yamaha motor. We would paint the bottom and leave it in the water. Our question is whether this model has an overboard drain. Also, if anyone knows the person/weight capacity of this boat, we'd love to have that info, too. (We would have to travel a little ways to see the boat, so we can't just take a quick trip to check it out, and I don't want to keep calling the seller back.) Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

I am pretty sure these are the correct numbers, please someone chime in if they are off.

Boat Weight: 210 lbs.
Max Weight Capacity: 550 lbs.
Swamped Capacity: 750 lbs.
Persons Capacity: 3
L.O.A.: 11'4"
Beam 5'0"
Max HP: 10

Not sure about the drain...it will self bail if that is what you mean.

Did that cover the drain question? Let us know if not.

I think it did. I take that to mean it won't collect all the rain water that gets in it, but it will drain itself out. Is that correct?

Thanks again for your help.

It will, if you leave the drain plug out while it's on the mooring. Seems counterintuitive, but these boats are so bouyant, the water level inside remains very low with no drain plug in, rain or otherwise.

Unless the boat is waterlogged, and sits low in the water, and will not self drain. When you look at the boat check for open screw holes, that could let water into the foam filled hull. Remove the motor, and lift the hull, You should be able to judge the weight of around 210 lbs.

Binkie,

Those are all important things that I should have said. Obviously it will not bail if your hull is so heavy the drain hole is underwater. If it will be sitting in the water exposed to waves, make sure it is sitting so the bow is facing the oncoming waves as well.

I think the engine maximum is a 20 horse. I had a late 80's- early 90's 11 sport and we had a 25 horse Evinrude on it. Definitely too much for 8 and 10 year olds.

I think you are probably right about 20 hp. I was in a newer one about a year ago with a 15 hp and it did not seem like too much. Felt like I was going about 25 mph, no gauges or gps but thats my guess.

I too am looking at a 1986 11' that has been restored (I hope it's not the same boat). I do not think it was restored well, maybe some real problems were covered up. I do not see an anchor locker on the boat and it looks, well, odd. Does anyone have pictures of a mid-80's 11' Sport than I can compare?

Let me see if this image attachment works...This is not my boat, nor anyone's that I know, just found this on the web at http://www.tropicalboating.com/boatin...ghies.html
It says it was 14 years old in 2001, so I guess that makes it an '87.

According to "another" BW site, the standard tender model is rated for 3 persons and 10hp. The sport model is rated for 4 persons (although same weight rating) and 20hp. Hope this helps...
