I have an older (20 years old) Montauk that has a swivel seat and I would like to remove it and find a fixed bench etc. A month or so ago I asked and saw some good photos but where would I find a good bench seat for my Montauk 17.

Nils,

You have a 1986 Montauk with a swivel seat? Is it mounted to a pedestal? Are you looking for a Reversible Pilot Seat (RPS) which is what was standard in a Montauk for over 30 years?

If so, you can order an RPS from a Whaler dealer. I believe the cost is about $1,200 plus shipping. They are not quite as nice as the ones made in the 1980s.

If you don't want to spring for a new one, then I would keep your eye on eBay...
A Montauk deserves an original RPS in my opinion...
Look at the future selling point if you ever sell the boat. Plus, you most likely already have the holes in the floor for the RPS so you won't have to drill any.. Just screw in the new or used RPS...

Personally, I would not put anything else in a Montauk except an original RPS....

Thanks. I haven't been able to enjoy the boat much as work has had me ragged but it is running well and fishing great. The single pedestal is a problem because, currently, there is no other safe seating.

Where can I see stats/photos/info on the seats ?

Nils,

You can assemble the four major components of an RPS yourself and maybe save a little money.

I have the Z-legs.

You can order an RPS seat cushion from Lois Hall at Hall's Nautical Upholstery

The stainless steel pivot frames must be ordered through a Whaler dealer.

Detailed plans are available for the teak seat back. If you have some modest woodworking skills, you can build one yourself.

Thanks, I am very interested in building it myself. I am a carpenter by vocation and can get it done. I just do not know what I require for a seat, etc.

Can you help me some more here. I am very interested in acquiring the "Z" brackets. etc.
