Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Repowering Justice 19' with Yamaha 130?

I have purchased a Justice 19' with a blown Merc. 225XL. I own a Yamaha 130 that runs great and would like to run it with this engine a couple years until I can afford to repower @ 200/225HP.

As this is the minimum HP recommended for this hull, what kind of performance should I expect? I know it will not be a rocket but certainly don't want it to be a turtle. Planned uses - Chesapeake Bay fishing & pulling kids on tubes (no skiing or boarding.

The Justice is a heavy boat. The minimum HP is 130, with the max being 225. I would say you can probably get away with the 130HP as long as you realize it won't be a speed demon, closer to a turtle. It will take a long time to plane, probably be sensitive to weight distribution. As for pulling tubes, I can't say, but my guess is getting the big S curve down and bouncing the folks off other boats wakes, will still make for an exciting ride if the kids are young.

If you can find a used 200HP - 225HP and then sell yours, you might be better off, otherwise toss the 130 on the boat and save your pennies for a new engine

If you go with the 130 HP the correct prop will be key to making it perform reasonably for your use... What do you have on the engine now?

I cannot read anything on the existing three-blade S/S prop.

You are right matching a proper pitch prop. would be a good call.

What size would be good: 4-Blade, 14/5x19 ?

Thanks.

In addition to what Kamie and Dave suggest, mounting position of the motor is also important.

The general guidance for mounting outboard engines on Boston Whaler hulls is for the anti-cavitation plate of the motor to be [b]above[b] the keel by 1 to 1 and 1/2 inches.

Good point Phil. Give this ARTICLE a read, explains the process pretty well.

Best place to start is to find the recommended WOT Rpm for that year Yamaha as that's the number you'll be wanting to hit with the right prop for the best performance with that boat and motor combination. And given you'll be at the minimum HP for that hull, it's even more important.

BTW, sometimes if you look at the prop hub by the hub nut, you can see the dia and pitch info there printed in a circle around the hub...
