At one time, there was not a constant on HP rating of outboards. Many mfg'r found it useful to rate HP at the engine becuase they came up with a higher horsepower number which is always good for marketing. However, I know at some point the standard was moved to to prop and all engines are rated that way today. Does anyone know what the year was?

I have a 1982 Evinrude 35 electric start and had a 1988 Evinrude 30 manual start. They perform identically and with the exception of the electric start and charging components appear identical.

Any idea of the year?

Outboards have been rated at the prop since '85, almost a quarter of a century now.

Prior to that, going back to the early '60's, powerhead horsepower was certified by the BIA specs that the industry adhered to. The certification tests were witnessed by competitors who were on the BIA board.

I think it was 1984, as my `84 115 inline six Mercury was prop rated horsepower.

From what I can gather, the ICOMIA propshaft power rating procedures were finalized and approved in 1983 for the 1985 model year. Those motors are introduced in about July or August of 1984.
