Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: My calender project.

Hello guys,
Earlier this month I was cleaning my office as I was heading out of town for a job. One of the things I did was to turn my Whaler 50th anniversary calendar ahead a month as I would out during the turnover. Then it stuck me. I will soon need a new calendar and that got me thinking. The Subaru Forester owners group I belong to does a yearly calendar on cafepress were they pick 12 of what they feel are the best images that have been submitted for entry throughout the year. One of those images also makes the cover. So, I thought about it and had an Idea. I have a shop site set up on
Cafepress that allows me to do calendars so, why don't I offer the same for the Whaler groups. I would do all of the layout work and sell them through the
smirked heritage storefront. This is a project this that I am undertaking myself and open to anyone willing to submit a photo for any site.
Here is what I had in mind.
-Photos must have something to do with Whalers. Just Whalers, people on boats, animals on boats, boats in nature, etc, etc.
-Photos that are submitted must have been taken by yourself or you have permission to use them from the photographer.
-Each person can submitas many photos as they wish with in reason.
-As for now I will select the 12 photos that will be included and one will make the cover. For the person who makes the cover I will give them a product of their choice off of my Smirked Heritgage store free of charge.
-I plan to make my selections based on composition, content of the photo, as well as clarity of the image. By clarity I mean focus of course but, also resolution of the image. The lower the resolution size the more difficult it is to get a quality image printed.
I will do my best in trying to get as many images as possible. However, until I begin to lay it out I will not know what is best. Personally I prefer a single image with maybe one smaller inset. Hope you trust me as I am a designer by profession.
If you wish to send an entry please send it to:
detroitdesign@gmail.com
MAKE SURE THE TITLE READS:
"2009 CALENDER ENTRY" and ONLY that
In the email please include your contact info in the email. This would include: name, address, phone number, and email address if other than the account you sent you images from. Also, please include your screen name from the site. This will be a great help in keeping everything sorted and will help me to contact the senders later if their image is chosen. If you could have them in by 11/15/08 it would be appreciated. I want to take the last two weeks of Nov to do the layouts so they can go on sale the first week of December. I will try to get the images loaded onto my Picasa Page as soon as I get them for everyone to view the entries.
http://picasaweb.google.com/DetroitDe...sCalender#
If you click on the right of the image on "More Info" I have named every photo with the persons name and screen name if included.
Finally, if you would like to cast your comments / votes on the picasa page please do. I was thinking if people liked an image you could post a comment with * - ***** (1-5) stars. I know it is not the easiest way but it is the best I could come up with. While the more comments / votes an image has does not guarantee a cover but, I will take it in consideration.
Hope this is something everyone enjoys. Thanks in advance to all.
Cheers,
Jeff

Very cool project Jeff! I need a new Calender and would love it to feature WC members boats. I need to get out and photo up the Montauk someplace "pretty". :D

Are photoshopped pictures allowed? I would like to sit a couple of hot bikini models in my 13 footer, and set the boat on a serene lake with mountains in the background. No scenery like that around here, including the models. :(

Binkie, you're pretty funny. Heck man, you live in the retirement capital of the world, what do you expect? I am sure all those old ladies running around in their Oldsmobiles were hot back in their day..... Think you can photshop a few pictures of them back into looking like young models again? :D

Rich, maybe you could photoshop repairs to my boat so I don't have to actually complete them. Heck if Cliff thinks you can morph old ladies into young ones I figure you must be really good at this photoshop thing. This has me wondering what your Sweeet 13 really looks like!;) You guys are too funny!

Rich,

Thanks to all who have sent images in. I went through today and tried to get all of them with the best guess for locations.

Guys,
I received an email today from Boston Whaler. The email came unsolicited and it was to share their thoughts on the idea. Seems as though they think it is a great idea and they expressed a desire to help. Traci Davis stated she would be sending along materials for me to include in the calender if I wish. Also, it looks I may be able to use the trademarked Whaler Logo on the calender.
It was nice to get the email and Whaler's offer of help. I have to say thanks to everyone that has sent in photos already. I know it was the amount of photos already posted that I am sure helped get this noticed. Also, you guys and gals are the reason the Whaler community is what it is. A great group and the reason why I always enjoy being a part of it and helping out.
So, if you have not sent in a image already please do. I would love to include it and others I know would love to see it.
If you send an image in (to the email address above) please include your name as well as screen name, address, as well as any other contact info. Also if you would please include where the image was taken. You can get lat / long coordinates from google maps and earth or, just give a general location by landmarks/ harbors/ towns.
Again Thank you.

Jeff,
I am truly enthused to see that the great Whaler Co has finally seen to give you some considerations.
I trust that I am not the only one here wishing in good faith;
That this calendar project will be a good and positive sign of things to come.
And this on this noted 50th Whaler anniversary of shown greatness.. and memorable years.
Positively Yours,
Serge.

Great news about Whaler supporting your effort. How's the calendar coming along? Have you selected the Whalers you're going to include in the calendar?

Jeff - It is going to be hard to pick just 12 photos! There are some nice shots of a lot of nice Whalers and Owners. I think it would be cool to feature as many models as possible. I also think the picture for the month should reflect the season. I am sure you have all this figured out but I am excited to see/purchase the final result. Great Work!

Rob,
Yes it is coming together nicely. Lots of great photos. I am going to find images that reflect the month and try to get a variatity of models despite my lust for some...mainly the rib sides:P

Great compilation so far Jeff! Nice shots from everyone!
It's nice to see these babies out from under the "project" aspect of photos and actually on the water where they belong!
You know, there aren't that many 1972 13 Sports with a smirk and blue interiors out there ;)- except for Kamie's Animal Boat, of course........
Great job.

The 3 photos Sean put up in Hawaii is just wrong. How can I compete with that water. Maybe I could get my Montauk to pull a flip or something. B)

2 weeks and counting! Jeff, what are you going to use as criteria for your photo selection process? I've looked at your photo album and have seen some incredibly nice Whalers.....it seems like it would be a tough job selecting the right ones for the calendar.
Have a great day!

Cliff as stated before I am mostly looking for image clarity, composition, and content of the photo. I am going to have two friends who I shot photography with help with the selection progress. Niether are real boaters but both have a good eye for a good image.
BTW While looking through the images tonight I noticed there are some hulls that are missing representation. It would be great to get some Sakonnets, Eastports, and Nausets as we have no images of them. Anyone has an image they would like to submit? It is no long limited to 3 images so send away.
Jeff

Thanks to all who have sent in their images. At this time I will begin choosing the images for each month as well as the cover and begin lay-out. I am going to have a couple friends who I shoot photography with help in the selection process. They will be good judges who can offer no bias opinions. Also, thanks to those who have added comments to the images. If anyone one else would like to weigh in on the images please feel free to do so.
I hope to have the calender up for purchase by Dec first as well as some new designs for the shirts. I have a 21 rib side and a 13 sport finished. I hope to have a Revenge W/T done as well as a post classic 170 Montauk.

All,
The calendars are out, for sale and ready to ship! Thanks to all that submitted images and of course like always not all of them were able to make it. I had myself and 3 other people (all non whaler board members) help in the selection process. Here are the winners:
January – John Martin
Febuary – Con and Martha Belfour
March – Kevin Schwoob
April – Denny Matsko
May – James McPadden
June – Wayne Baker
July – Carson Perry
August – David Thickens
September – Jason Goldfarb
October – Joe Morgan
November – Don McIntyre
December – Tony Wilde shot by Warren Tom
And the Cover goes to…….
David Thickens. The shot of his 22 Outrage in Split Rock Harbor is truly a site. Everyone of my judges selected it as their favorite. For this honor David, you let me know what you want from the shop for free and I will get it to you.
Also,
I have to greatly thank Traci Davis from Whaler. She was a great help in getting me logos as well as all approvals needed to use the logos. Thanks Traci! It is because of people like you that Whaler is the brand it is.
The calendars are $15.99 and my cost is $14.99. I added 50 cents per calendar to cover a couple miscellaneous costs. The other 50 cents I plan to donate to a cause that is boating or fishing related. Just wanted to be up front on that.
Here is the Calendar:

Home Site where you can purchase it.

Finally,
I have added designs of the classic 13 sport and 21 ribside to the collection of wearables. I still have more to add so stop back.

Hey Jeff,
Fantastic work here..
Ordered a couple last night..By phone.
Any chance you are going to do a optional secondary draft with the rest of the photos submitted?\
And make them available?
I would also take another couple..
It looks that great.
Thanks for the great efforts.

All,
Thanks for kinds words and orders. Also, cafepress just sent me a coupon code today for the store. If you place an order for over $50 just the code "NEWLOOK" to get $5 off. A little late for some I know but, thought I would pass it long anyway.

Jeff, you have done an awesome job ! Thanks for your efforts.
With that being said may I just point out the followlng......in the not so distant past I felt very comfortable on this site, but for reasons I can't identify nor pinpoint currently I do not ! The technologically advanced software that is presented here is welcomeing but seems to come with limits. I participate in many other online forums with simular programs without feeling like I do Here. I respect the owner for what he does and has accomplished, but since the new upgrades here I see fewer posts......am I alone in these feeling?
Joe I'm not attacking you....what can we do to help ? Do we need to gather $$ for a better server ? I'm sure there are many here that will help with any hardware you may need.
Whaler Central, keep up thr good work......but I miss the fun that was here not so long ago, Jim

Jim. I thinks it's just a phase folks are going through with the faultering economy etc. Since many people don't have much $$, they are more focused on survival than on chatting online. Personally I don't think it has anything to do with the new server or outlay of the website. The fun will be back in February/March timeframe when we all start to get that cabin fever again.....just itching to get our boats back in the water and making more memories.

Jim,
Can you elaborate more.
Are there problems with the server?
As far as we know there are no known problems with our site or the server.
Everything is much faster than it used to be with NO errors that we have seen.
At this time we have not seen any problems with our site. If there is, please let us know.
Thanks
