I JUST PURCHASED AND BROUGHT HOME MY 1976 15' WHALER SPORT WITH A 1983 50-HP MERC. I AM LOOKING TO PUT ON A NEWER MOTOR, AND AND SAW ON THE MOTOR CHOICES THAT THE 2-STROKE YAMAHA 50-HP WAS NOT A CHOICE. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THAT IS. I APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE. MY WHALER IS IN NEED OF ALOT OF ATTENTION SO I WILL BE ASKING ALOT OF QUESTIONS. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

is there anything wrong with the Merc? if not then why repower, in my opinion the 50 merc is a strong runner and has always been very dependable
my 76 sport has a 95 model 70 Johnson and runs around 42 mph-just for reference

Since you are in the Charleston Area you need to look up the 15 Whaler Wonder Mick.

Here[/color] is Mick's nearly finished 15 Project.
As for a motor if you are going to spend the money for a new motor I would certainly head the route of an 50/60/ or 75 E Tec. The strong low end torque of a 2 Stroke, the quiet, low emissions, and fuel efficient characteristics of a 4 Stroke, and lighter than most 4 strokes of the same power.

Call Richard at Cape Romain Marine in McClleanville. He is a dealer for Evinrude, Yamaha, and Suzuki and will give you a lot of pros and cons on each. He talked me into putting the 60hp ETEC on mine and I couldn't be happier :)

I appreciate all of your comments. I have two small boys, I was just looking to put on a newer motor that had a little more life and dependability left in it. The 50-merc runs good, but I have been seeing some pretty good deals on newer/used yamaha's (2002 and newer). In addition I just do not kwow how well the 50-merc had been maintained, when I changed the plugs I discovered that the previous owner had been using the wrong plugs (ofr starters), and if the condition of the hull is any indicator I just need to go ahead and bite the bullet on a motor. the hull looks like they hit every oyster bed between here and hilton head.
Just out of curiosity how fast is that 15 whaler w/ 130. That thing is looks good.

I put a 70 yamaha on my project 15. it is a good motor for pulling kids on the water and runs at about 42 mph if you want it to.
On a side note that 15 footer with a 130 is very cool. It must be a blast to run.
