Just bought an '87 13 with an older 25 hp Johnson that I want to repower. Boat sits great in the water. Not heavy. What do you guys thinks about a Mercury 40 hp ELPTO. Will that work? Thanks. Looking forward to fixing up this classic!

Plenty of power, but quite a bit heavier that the old 25. You will probably have to redistribute weight, battery and fuel forward, to get it to run smooth, without porpoising.

Thanks Rich, Thats is why I'm thinking I better stay with a two stroke rather than a heavier 4 stroke. Trying to check the weight of the replacement motor.

Check out the Yamaha 40 4-stroke. It is quite a bit lighter than the other 4-strokes. If I had the money to repower my 13, that is exactly what I would put on it.

Just repowered my 13 with an `08 25 Merc (Tohatsu) EFI 4 stroke, It weighs 157 lbs. Also about a 35 lb. Stern mounted Electric trolling motor. Only 3 hours so far, but 3 hours no wake in a river with 2 people on board is not much of a test.

Whatever motor you put on the back of that thing should be just fine....

All of the new injected two stroke motors are great. I haven't heard of any trouble out of any of them and mine runs like a top and sips fuel and has plenty of power.

talking to my local dealer he is suggesting to put a 25 two stroke. less weight. enough power. any thoughts on the 25 ? keeping in mind that I want my kids to use the boat is a 40hp over kill? thanks

A 40 isn't over kill, even with the kids. A 13 with a 40 on it will run between 30-35 mph. When the kids get older, you'll want to pull them around behind the whaler too and a 25 just isn't enough to do that with. My Whaler has a 40 on it and I an training my kids to be careful with it..... If you can, get the 40....you won't be sorry.

I would definately go with the 40 if it were me. The 25 will probably were great for you now, but CES says, when the kides get older, and heavier, you will need more. :) Very little difference in weight and probably not a gigantic difference in cost to purchase or operate.
