Well im leaning to repowereing my 17. Leaning toward an etec. What time of year do you think is the best time to buy? IM not in a hurry and was thinking around the end of the year. It seems like i have seen some better deals, interest rates, or extra warrentys at times. just wondering what peoples thoughts are? Thanks joe

If you able to install your own outboard, the best time to buy one is when you find a dealer or wholesaler on the Internet, that has bought a few engines from hurting or overstocked dealer, and sells them for cash, no tax, on his Internet site. These motors are in the crate, unused,new and are warranted. Just poke around and you will find them. I got a great deal on a new 25 Merc. FI 4 stroke, and zotcha got a great deal on a 60 Yamaha four stroke.

If you're installing yourself (not recomended unles it's a SMALL engine) check out www.edsmarinesuperstore.com. He has about the cheapest prcies around for that sort of thing.

I disagree. The bigger the engine the more you will save, most directions are easy to follow, everything is plug and play, and you will learn how it goes together, which is a plus down the road. Of course engines that have to be set up by computer are off limits.

I agree Rich, if you have the skills, DIY rigging is a great way to go. And with the computer engines you mentioned, one could still rig it then take it to a dealer for the rest of the software set up.

If you install and E-Tec yourself you must take it to a dealer to do checkout and sign the warranty card. It is not that hard to install, everything is plug and play.

If you buy a motor from an unauthorized dealer on the internet, like myself and zotcha did, you get a bill of sale, and you must fill out all the paperwork yourself, and send it in. I haven't had to take the motor to a dealer, and I don`t expect a problem. Has anyone have any experience along this line and was there a problem?

Evinrude does not let you do that, you have to purchase thru a dealer. In fact, if you purchase thru a dealer that is not authorized to sell the HP engine your purchasing you can loose out on some of the deals.

Joe, At the end of the year, starting in Nov or so, Evinrude announces their specials, usually $ off or extended warranty. Make sure you check their website for dealers authorized to see the HP engine you want and go talk to them. If you want to rig it yourself make the arrangements now.

I just got a recall notice from Mercury to bring my motor to a Mercury dealer for a problem with motor mounts. Well at least I`m on file with them, and I`ll make an appointment with a dealer.

I am also looking for a new 70-90 HP for my 1969 Sakonnet- I have not seen many leftovers on the internet- other than Ed's (which i saw above) who have you guys bought from? (I am in the NJ/NY/Eastern PA Area)

In your area I'd give Barnacle Bills' a call, the owner is the guy who started the Etec Owners Forum and the place seems to be very well respected over all. They may even have a previous model year in stock, worth a call.

Starting Sept. 15, Evinrude is offering a 5 year factory warranty and I-Command digital gauges for repowered boats or a rebate.

This is the place I bought my new 25 Merc EFI 4 stroke. I see he has some new 50hp 4 stroke Mercs and some new 90hp 2 stroke merc, plus many good used outboards. I would recommend him. He`s in St. Pete Fl. but ships. PS I don`t get any consideration for posting this. He did right by me, that`s all.

Thanks for the advice. I have been thinking that some time in December might be good. I did mount a 40 Johnson on my old 72 13 ft. But to be honest im so snake bit lately that id be afraid to do that now! I have been leaning to the etec, but am wondering if there is any real difference now to the motor quality from one brand to the next. Sometimes im wondering if its better to buy the deal than the brand? Thanks joe

Evinrude and Johnson are the same company/branch off each other. Most of the evinrude and johnson outboards are the same. its sort of like GMC and Chevy. Anyway... Personally I think the best time to buy an outboard would be at the end of the season or early winter. This is when people could have given up on boating and decided that the gas was to expensive... I know there are some very crazy people in the world. It would also make for a fun rewarding winter project. Good Luck!!!

Thanks. I didnt ask that last question correctly. What i meant to ask is there really much difference now in quality and reliablity from one brand to the next? I have been looking at the etec, but are the yam, mercs, and hondas good too? I have had some bad luck with older Mercs so im scared of them. What is everyones thoughts on long term reliablity? I tend to keep things for long time. I guess where im going with this is if all of the major brands are good now, should i just buy the best deal? Thanks joe
