I have a 1982 Johnson 90HP 2 stroke. It seems to run great, I just bought the boat so I am still learning about the boat and engine. When I take it out of the water to clean and flush I see a little oil leak out from the lower part of the engine. Any ideas as to what could be going on? And how can I find out the weight of this engine? I also have a 1986 johnson 7.5 as a kicker, is this to much weight for my 1982 Montauk 17? Thanks for your help

Greg,
Where is the oil leaking from? The drain plug or your the prop exhaust? To be sure you do not have a leaking seal on the lower unit pull the plug to drain a little oil out. If it is milky / creamy in color you have a leaking seal. If the oil in the lower unit is not milky or creamy then it is most likely just unburnt 2 Cycle oil draining out of the exhaust. This is a common occurrence in old 2 Cycle motors. My OMC V6, V4, and Merc inline 6 all did this. The oil is typically very black and has a metallic / acrid oder.
The weight on your old 90 I believe should be 310 lbs. Throw in around 60lbs for the kicker. You have nothing to worry about with what you have on your stern.

Why don`t you just drain the lower unit? It will tell you everything. If oil is leaking out, then water is leaking in. It will be a milky color. If it looks like oil, or is just dark in color, add fresh oil and forget it. The oil you see dripping out the exhaust is just unburned 2 stroke oil..

Thanks Guys. It is dark oil so I guess it is just unburned oil. Thanks again

You should still unscrew the two plugs, and drain and refill the gearcase. It is a good idea on any motor that is new to you, or as a yearly maintenance on any outboard. Gearcase repairs are costly, resealing is relatively inexpensive.

IS it more of a tar like substance or is it really oil? I know that when I ran some "Ring free" in my gas, the result was a discharge of a tar like substance. Also, you may be running too much oil in your gas/oil mixture and the run off is exiting from the exhaust housing.
