Can anyone advise as to why the gelcoat gets a yellow tint to it when you take it out on the water? What is the best way to clean it?

Everyone gets that after the boat is in the water. Mary Kate On Off takes it off. Sold at any boat store. I use it but be careful and cover up the trainer otherwise the strong acid in it will tear at the trailer and bottom paint.

Acid? Isn't that bad for the gelcoat?

I have noticed that once I buffed out and waxed my hull, the scum line is less prevalent. A good scrub with boat soap gets it off.
Think you should buff her out! :D
Yes, acids can be bad for gel coat. As you can see from the CRC
Spec Sheet there are several acids. Used sparingly and cleaning the surface throughly will prevent serious damage. Be careful.

I normally use on off like once or twice a year but I do a good wax twice a year also after I do it and that does seem to keep it off.

So waxing the hull will remove the yellowing?

The yellow/brown stains are caused fron Tannin in the water which comes from trees and vegetation. These stains are easily removed with a cleaner containing Oxalic Acid,I use Starbrite Hull cleaner, simply wipe on and it will disappear then rinse well.A spay bottle also works very well.

Do you know if the StarBrite will also damage the trailer?

Tom -
I have read a comment from Finnigan that states the Starbrite hull cleaner will eat the galvanization off the trailer if not rinsed off.

Yes, the StarBrite hull cleaner with also damage the galvanization of the trailer. Always make sure your trailer is wet when using hull cleaners containing these types of acids. Rinse the trailer and hull thoroughly and wash with soap afterwards. Then rinse again. Try not to use these products too often. Like others have said, waxing the boat regularly will reduce the amount of staining.
