I have a 1984 90 hp Evinrude. Recently I discovered that one of my coils is broken. Every time I try to buy a new coil online the dealer wants me to buy four. I was wondering if it is OK to replace just one coil or if I should replace all of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There is no problem replacing just one coil. How did the coil break? Is it cracked from age? If so, the others may not be far behind. An easy way to check them is to mist them with a water spray bottle while the motor is running. If they have hairline cracks they will arc to the block.

ok thanks i will give that a try. i can only assume it was from old age since the coils are original to the engine. thanks again
