I just got a Whaler of my very own. It used to by my Grandpa's, and he gave it to us about 10 years ago. I moved out of my parents 6 years ago and the boat hasn't gotten much use since. I convinced my dad I would use it, so it is now mine.

From something else I read and what else I could find it is a 1972 Sourpuss.
Stenciled Number 2A8343. Any information you know and could share would be great.

I'm looking for good resources for restoring it. It is in fairly good condition, especially the outer hull. The blue interior has a lot of spider cracks. What is the recommended measure for these?

The wood, where exposed to the elements, needs refinishing. Any resources for this would be great.

As far as I know it is all the original stuff. It still has the seat cushions.

It has a 1973 Evinrude Sportster 25 HP that still works well. Anybody know anything about these?

The gas tank has a crack in the bottom. Is there any way to fix this, or just get a new plastic one?

That is enough questions for now.

Any help would be appreciated.

The wood can usually be refinished if it hasn't gone to far. Otherwise, you can just replace the wood that is beyond refinishing.

OMC/Bombardier still sells 6 gallon metal tanks the last time I checked. I had one in my prior 1972 Sport 13'.

There are a lot of photos on this site that shows the parts associated with many models of Whalers. Take a look in the OEM photos section and see if you can recognize any parts there.

I can't find much information on the Sourpuss model. I think it was only made for a few years.

Any idea how much it would be worth? Not that I want to sell it. I plan to use it.

Will saltwater effect it heavily? What aboutthe 73 motor? Will it be saltwater compatible?

Any boat or engine will take its toll from Saltwater. The best protection anyone can do is wash the boat, the trailer, and run the engine on the muffs using FRESH water. There will always be some deposits and residue, but that's about all we can do.
