I just purchased a Montauk w/ 90 hp Merc 4 stroke. We live in Texas and will use the boat for fun and fishing on the North Texas lakes as well as fishing on the coastal Texas areas esp Galveston Bay area. I want to install a Garmin 545s Chartplotter and fishfinder. I need to know where to install the Garmin transducer with the least problem to drilling through the hull. Stern transducer placement will not be a good idea for the shallows on the coast. Additionally, if anybody has had quality installation work done in the Clear Lake,Kemah area. Lastly, anyone's thought on portable vs installed VHS for coastal boating.

William,
Doing a thru-hull transducer on a new Montauk 170 would I think be nearly impossible. Well nothing is impossible. Why is a transom mount so bad for the shallows?

Hi William and welcome to WhalerCentral.
Can you verify which model Whaler you own?
1. Montauk 17'
2. Montauk 170
These are two entirely different boats so we would like to know which one you have so we can better assist you.
