I am new to coastal boating. My family and I have a small house near the SC coast and I am interested in buying a small whaler mostly for recreation, creek and intercoastal fishing. i have been looking in my area and I have found a few boats I have narrowed it down to.
1) 2007 170 Montauk w/ trailer and extra Asking $19000
2) 1998 or 1999 18' Outrage with 135 merc and trailer +-$15000 (there are a couple in this area)
the 2007 is in show room condition the others are in very good condition
Passengers will include up to 4 adults and 3 small children at times, but usually just one or two adults
At this time I am not that interested in off shore boating but it would be nice to have that ability.
Any wisdom or suggestion would be appreciated
thanks
Richard

Welcome Richard!
If new to boating, go for the 170 but know that 4 people and 3 kids is a lot for that boat since the max engine size is 90 hp.
If I was you, I would go up to the Outrage 18/19. Higher freeboard, better ride (length, beam and weight help).
Shop around. This is definitely a buyer's market. I would look at those 90's Outrage 18 with at least a 150 hp since you will have a fair amount of weight.
TomG and RonB are shown as owners of this model/year Outrage. Maybe they will post.

I am concerned it might be crowded on the 170 but for the most part it will just be my wife and I and our small child.
My other concern ( and maybe someone can help me with this) is will the Outrage 18 fit in a standard height garage. i spoke with someone yesterday who had a 18 Out rage 98' who said that it would not fit in their garage due to the height of the front rail.
Since these boats are not local I can't measure them myself
Can someone comment on whether this boat can fit in a standard garage?
thanks for the input
Richard

While I don't know precisely, knowing from what I have read, the Outrage will not fit inside a standard 8' high door.
The 90's version of the Outrage had a taller console than the prior version. Something like a current 190 console. I did read of a whaler owner who modified his 190's console rail to be removable so it would fit in a garage. You can see the size of the 190 console in this photo (from specs page)

Depending on the trailer, the 170 should fit, height wise. If it is a bit tall, lowering the tongue jack and pushing it in will do the trick.
Here is the 170 console photo

General Rule of thumb on overall length is hull length +2' for the motor and 4' for the tongue. Approximately 23' in total.
