I have a 1973 sakonnet with the casting platform.
Does anyone know if the original platform came painted or was it mahogany??
Thanks

While I know the Montauk casting platform came painted, I don't know if yours did or did not.
Tom would know most definitely.:D

The forward casting platforms of the early Sakonnet models were fir or pine painted white.
The Montauk platforms were fiberglass with teak access doors. There is a photo on the left sidebar of the early Montauk platform or you can also view it in the OEM Parts Photo section.

When redoing some of the Sakonnet platforms, some people chose to replace the wood with Mahogany and varnish it like the rest of the wood on the console and seat. This looks beautiful when done that way in my opinion. This would probably be a lot more upkeep of course.
