thinking about a repower using a 2007 40 hp yamaha four stroke i would love some thoughts on the yamaha's in general. Also Would a 25 hp feel like a big downgrade from a 40 hp 2 stroke that was on the boat. I might go with the 25

I have had 2 yamies, very well designed and reliable engines. One of them was also a 25 HP... and yes there would be a very noticeable difference between a 25 and a 40... If you plan on any water sports like tubing, the 25 will really struggle if it will pull at all..:| Mine was on a modified V heavy duty Jon boat, still much lighter than a Whaler.

I would be looking at the weight difference of the 4 stroke vs 2... Could be huge depending on the engine..:o

The yamies of this size are not too bad, 115Lbs (version I had) for a 2 stoke 25 vs 183 Lbs for a 4 stroke 40... But still nearly 70 lbs difference hanging off the transom. On a 13 that may be significant.

An Etec weighs in at a whopping 240 lbs for a 40 Hp (same block up to 60 hp)

I have read several posts where someone put a 25hp on their 13' only to be sorry they did it. I think that if you went with the 40hp, you'll be happy with the performance and speed. A 40hp, especially a 2007 model, would sip fuel and would not use much more fuel than a 25hp. We're only talking a 15hp difference here. Go with the 40hp.

What would be the reason for the 25hp? What is the price difference? I would go with the 40hp myself. Remember you will enjoy this boat for a long time and If you decide to sell the hp might play a factor.

I`m planning on buying a new 25 Merc 4 stroke (weight179lbs) on Tues. for my 13 footer. Previous power was a `58 35 Evinrude Lark(weight125lbs) 29mph gps with two people. The new Merc may a couple mph slower. The old Evinrude was shaft, not prop hp. Thirty years ago I had a 13 footer powered by a 25 Evinrude (shaft hp), that would pull my daughter on skies.

Transom weight is the biggest problem with the 13 ft. Whaler. they run well with a 25, and the extra weight and the 10 mph speed difference in the 40hp, causes porpoising problems.

Personally I never have more than one person and myself aboard.

thanks guys, it always helps to get opinions before making the purchase. i decided to go with the 40. its a thousand over the budget, but i had a 40 two stroke on it last year and she went pretty well intil i hit that rock.
