I'm trying to sort out which motor to use on my 13'I have a 18 hp evinrude and a 40 merc. The merc needs some work but will be the motor I use once it is ready to go. In the mean time I want to use the 18. But I think it might be a 20" shaft. Is this a problem? I gather its not Ideal but I have been told that it doesn't really matter. Am I being mislead? thanks in advance!

Erik,
If you have the notched transom you should use the 15 inch shaft length.
However, if this is just temporary, your could mount the 20 inch shaft motor as high as you can mount it and use it that way. You most likely will not get top end performance out of the boat because you will have too much drag hanging down in the water. Plus of course, this is only 18hp instead of the 40hp you could have on it which is what the max rating is for this model with remote steering.

Thanks to Joe! I'm a brand new member and I joined with the same question. I'm taking the old girl out for the first time this weekend and now I know what to expect. I'm looking into getting a transom riser if she won't perform properly. My motor is a 25 Johnson long shaft tiller I'm looking to convert to the original console steer.

Schickie,
Welcome aboard WhalerCentral.
You and Boaterik should take a look at this members Personal Page and how the engine was raised on the transom.
