I have a very simple question which I am sure has been asked before.

I have got a boat with an 87' Mercury 50 hp 3cyl with the Autoblend injector system.

Question - Should I remove this and run a straight line from the gas tank to the fuel pump and just run mixed 50:1 gas rather then depending on this pump to not fail me?


Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's all personal preference. I don't have any of my boats running on pre-mix.

After doing some research on the web it seems like the OMC system was a lot more reliable. This is the first Mercury I have ever owned. I have dealt with OMC engines and premix fuel on my whaler. I have never dealt with the AutoBlend system. The Merc is a 50 hp. From what I gather the oil is pulled into the gas line by the vacuum/pull created by the fuel pump.

Seems to me that it is essentially the same as running a premix. Why wouldn't I just premix my own fuel and take the middle man (autoblend) away to eliminate any risk of that failing me? Or should I not worry about it failing?

I'm not sure about Merc's Autoblend pump, but there's kind of a myth running around that the OMC VRO pumps aren't reliable when in fact it's just the opposite. Given that these pumps will automatically mix much less than a 50:1 ratio when the max is not needed, they're much more efficient than mixing by hand. So with the price of oil these days, it makes sense to me to keep the unit in place.

I just bought an old Mercury Autoblend system for my 15 Suzuki kicker. I bought it to eliminate the need for an on deck fuel tank of pre-mix. My 200 Suzuki is oil injected, and I wanted the kicker to use fuel from the same tank.

I have run it for over 10 hours on the water and it works great. It sure is nice to not have the extra fuel tank on deck.
