Hello,
I just became the owner of my first whaler. A 1989 Montauk 17 with a center console and a swivel seat. I live on Nantucket and will be fishing inshorea bit. I am a little skeptical of the swivel except when soloing. Anyone have advice on this. Should I consider replacing it with a bench seat so two can sit ?
Any help is appreciated

Hi Timber,
Welcome to WhalerCentral and congratulations on your new boat!
I'm guessing you are referring to what is general called a captains seat. If that is the case, a large number of folks have these for the primary seating in their Whaler. I have never had that arrangement but did have a pair of them in front of the console. No one complained about the seats.

Where can I go online and look at different seating choices for this hull ?
Thank you for the welcome and it's great to see such a great website available so easily. I am looking forward to this summer. The boat is in great shape and, even though it's an original motor (89' Suzuki 75) it is in decnt condition and ran well yesterday when I took her out for the first cruise.

Thank you guys, really amazing on the replies.
I don't have any photos yet but I will soon. The reason why I would want to change the seating is two fold: To have a more comfortable seating for 2 and put the fuel tanks underneath with the possibility of more storage.
I will get some photos on line soon.
Any info is greatlyy appreciated. Thank you !:)

It looks to be the wise seat from seeing those photos...

Only One?
Someone apparently just added the Swivel Seat(s) at a later date as the Swivel Seats were not an option for the Montauks..
If you look at the floor underneath the swivel seat, I bet you will find 4 holes on each side where the RPS was originally installed. You could have six holes on each side and that would mean that there was a Leaning Post originally installed.

I don't believe that Whaler ever offered the Montauk with anything other than the RPS.
Nice Montauk mike

Interesting... I'll look in the morning.
What's better sitting or leaning on a boat of that size ?

Whalers tend to pound so personally I would rather be in a standing leaning position. The RPS like the one pictured above is real nice because you can lean or sit depending on the water and your activities. Enjoy, summer soon!
