What is everyone's opinion on my situation? I have a 1979 Whaler 11' Sport that I bought 6 months ago. It has a 1979 Johnson 15, that runs OK. I am not sure if it is pumping water correctly, and it is a little hard to start. A couple days ago I bought a 1979 evinrude 15 horse off of ebay that is in excellent condition. It was fully serviced, with a rebuilt carb, new gaskets in the lower unit, new impeller, new gear oil, low hours, freshwater motor, and it starts on the first pull. The more I think about it, I feel as though I shouldn't have bought the new motor. I boat in saltwater on Cape Cod, and think that the evinrude will get ruined in a season. Should I just keep the old Johnson on and run it until it dies, and sell the Evinrude? or put the new evinrude on it and call it a day. Or sell the whaler with the new motor?

I say put the good motor on (it won't get ruined in 1 season if properly maint.) and enjoy the boat, I had my Evinrude for 16 years in salt water, I got rid of it due to age ('87), Re-built once myself, they tell me it's still running.

Not sure why you are concerned that the newer Evnrude would only last one season. In fact, the Evinrude and the Johnson are basically the same motor with diffrent decals and paint. Everyone seems so afraid of a motor that is used in salt water. If it is taken care of, the sacrificial zincs replaced and system flushed routinely then it should be just as reliable as one that has been used in fresh water. I have been using motors in salt water for 40 years and have no more problems than my friends that are in fresh water. Salt water is not a curse or a sentence for an outboard motor
