From a previous sail boat, I kept the 4 hp British Seagull engine. It has hardly been used but starts easily and runs well. Has anyone used one of these for a kicker? My whaler is the new 150 Montauk. I was thinking about mounting it, and bringing along a gallon of 10:1 fuel mix in case I needed to get home, avoiding a tow. It doesn't weigh much and it plus the 60hp 4 stroke Mercury should be well under the 305 pound limit for the transom.

If it's a 2 stroke and the shaft is the right length, it'll probably work.
I'm sure you'll get some more experienced answers in a while.

If memory serves, this is the engine with the exposed flywheel and the knotted cord to pull-start? My family had one for the Avon on our sailboat. You had to use the palm of your hand to cover the carb intake to stop the engine. Primitive, but effective. Maintenance and repairs are pretty straightforward, just keep your beard short enough to stay out of it when bending over to adjust the throttle! Is it powerful enough to push you through chop if need be? It would surely make a conversation piece perched on your transom in all it's omigod-that's-ugly-what-the-hell-is -that splendor... :-) I say give it a try...

Yes, that is the one. The prop has four blades and can push a heavy boat at a steady, slow speed. Once I get the boat out of the water and home next week I will check shaft length and identify any mounting issues.

I would not bother...that 4 stroke is not gonna break down. That Seagull will be all bones by the time that merc even gives you a hiccup.
