An acquaintence of mine announces last Thursday, "I buying a Boat!"
Gee, that's great...what're you getting?
A 40' Chris Craft!
My, that's a lot of boat Gregg..got twin 454's? 250 gal. gas tank?
Well... Yeah! How did you know that?
Just a guess...Do you fish?
No....I just got it to take the wife and 2.3 kids out on...
When was the last time you drove a boat like that? When was the last time you were on a boat?
He couldn't remember...
How difficult can it Be?????You just take those handle things and let 'er rip! Right?
Gregg, there's a little more to it than that...depends on which way you push or pull them....I suggest you rent "CaddyShack"....
Oh! I love that scene!! That's me alright!!!
I was suggesting that you take the USCG Boater Safety course before turning the key....
Naaaa...I ain't got time for that!
OK...but why 40 foot? My family of 7 grew up on the boat I still have in the water 43 years later, without a problem...
I know you told me...but what kind of a boat do you have again?
A 17' Boston Whaler...
Nope...that's WAY too small for my needs! What with the kids and all...
You do realize it's gonna cost a $1000 to fill up and a couple of hundred to take out for the day?
Yeah but...It'll be fun! What'd you spend on your boat last year?
I put 400 hours on it and spent a total of $225 in gas....
Geez...that's pretty good!
I thought so.....
So when you're on The Hudson...there's no speed limit and you just go right down the middle right????
Not exactly...you have to pay attention to the bouys, or you'll end up tearing up propellors, rudders or punching a big hole in your boat and sinking and drowning....
Oh...the dealer says that happens all the time! Goes with the territory!
I'm sure he does....so what color is your new boat Gregg?
White with Blue trim! Why?
I'll be sure to take cover whenever I see you coming.....
Scary!

Well...not really...he's gonna buy the thing, and wants me to show him how to drive it! He figures a Maiden Voyage or two and he's ready to head for Block Island a couple of hundred miles from here, with the Family on board!
You just can't make this stuff up!
I've got another one titled "Marine Emergency!" from a couple of years ago, that's really funny. I'll send it on soon before I forget the details....

Right ! Block Island, across fully open water in an area called "The race" because of the wild tidal changes, and swift moving current that the "steel hulled Ferry" has trouble negotiating at full throttle, with an experianced Coast Guard certified captain. Whats the name of this guys boat, I don't want to meet him out there. If he tries "Block Island" from "Montauk", he's going to die for sure ! You really better know what you're doing out there, you're out of site from land (15 miles east of Montauk), a very dangerous area of the ocean, that keeps the Coast Guard quite busy.
