Here's a plan, head East, around Orient Pt. into Peconic Bay picinc lunch on the beach Just North of the Shinnecock Canal. Then exit Shinnecock Inlet into the Atlantic and be upon some of the best fishing grounds on the East Coast,we'll find Tuna not far off. This may be better than going off to Montauk as if the conditions aren't perfect we stay in the Bay.

I have relatives that own a B & B in Greenport.
Shelter Island is cool too.
I hope we catch some tuna.
Mills Canvas should get involved with this one. I know Bob Mills has a Whaler.

I know the area out there pretty well and can reccomend some places to anchor or tie up in the greenport area. That is a long run all the way down the peconic and out the inlet.. especially if it is snotty out. The whole shelter Island area is reallt great. The new town marina in greenport is really nice and may be a perfect spot to have a get together.

Jim, you don't scare easy. What's that little girl of yours think about getting air?
She must really know how to hold on.
Are you bringing either of the kids this time?

Also, we have to keep in mind people that would rather tow. Montauk is easy to get to with the ferrys and all.

Another thought, maybe we should make plans to spend the night. It's expensive out there, but maybe we could camp. I know some people said they would rather spend the night for the Manhattan trip.

It's your show Jim, I'm just throwing ideas out there.

It would be nice at some point to be able to have a bunch of boats together even if some are on trailers, so we can pine over everyones ideas and restorations while sipping a nice cold frosty one. We could probably solve al the worlds problems in one afternoon.:p

Roger,I'm only good for one good show a year ! This one is up for group decisions. I'll go along with the majority. Don't know if you knew but I'm a single Dad with 2 kids, 5 and 7, it's a rare day that they are not with me,the little guy was with his cousins for Manhattan and is "Mad" after seeing the "Armyman boats". The kids are troopers and love the water as much as I do. So you saw the old girl in the air? It's a smooth ride until you land but in a chop you don't land too long. Camping would be great anywhere we could doesn't have to be there, let's just do something again as a group this summer.

Didn't know you are a single dad Jim. But, from what I see, you got happy kids. :)
I didn't actually see you get airborne, but it's bound to happen. I personally try to avoid air, but I did go on a test ride in 22 foot revenge and that guy got air on purpose. :o The amazing thing was it took it just fine.

I think the East end of Long Island is an excellent choice. Even if the weather isn't the best, we can still all launch our boats and cruise arund Shelter Island. But, if our luck holds out, we'll be Tuna fishing.

I think with a little planning, we can reserve a bunch of camping space. Docking might be a little tougher, but I'll start checking into it.

There's a list of campgrounds at the bottom of this link -

How far of a boat trip are we talking about to get into tuna. I would like to be a part of that get together, but towing from NJ brings me through Manhattan and the mid-town tunnel. Has anyone made that trip, and is it a problem? I have no fear of towing through the city, I just don't know if there are restrictions.
Thanks, Joe

If weather is favorable we should be able to find Tuna less than 7 miles offshore of Shinnecock Inlet, multiple boats increases chances a we scout more water. We''ll get em !

You'll want to get on I495 (Long Island Expressway) east to the end. Then follow the signs to either Orient Point or Montauk.
No trailers allowed on parkways.
I think if you follow the same rules as commercial trucks you will always be safe.

Here's a link to: Which roads around New York City are commercial trucks not allowed to drive on?

Here's some more info I pulled from the above link -

You could also request copy of NYC Truck Route for FREE via mail from NYCDOT or call 311 (Outside of NY- 212-NEW YORK)
This site tells you wear Trucks are allowed.

You may also want to check MTA's Bridge & Tunnel service advisory including Port Authority of NY and NJ bridge/tunnels.

Depends on what truck are you driving.

Might as well get the ferry info up here for anyone that would rather cut accross -

Cross Sound Ferry

The ferry is a great option .. and there are 2 locations. It can get expensive but its another opportunity to see the area from the water while your on the ferry.
FYI... MarineMAX the whaler and searay dealer out there is having there Aquapolooza rendezvous sometime in the end of july or august. ill make some calls to the guys I know in mattituck and see what the deal is. That might be a great opportunity to get everyone together. I went to it last year in my Sea Ray and it was a ton of fun, food and giveaways. More info to come.

arthureld - Thank you for taking the time and passing the information. I don't think there will be a problem if I stay on NJ I-95 into NY and pickup I-495 and bring it straight out to the nearest ramp (TBD?)
I have an SUV pulling my 23 Conquest @ 102" wide by 10'4" high.

I'm still looking for a campground on the Peconic Bay that has a boat ramp and docks. :D

I know of this place on the north road in Greenport. I have never stayed there. And its not near the water.
I know of a couple of ramps not sure of non resident access. I will be out there with my whaler this weekend and will do some fact finding.

Thanks for helping out Ed. I think that place will work out fine if we don't come accross someplace that has camping, boat ramp and docks all in one spot.
Peconic Bay is huge, you'd think we would have a bunch of choices. Maybe no one would notice of we set up camp in the Shelter Island nature preserve. :p

I live on "Long Island" (Just outside of NYC).....From NJ: "Truck Route" so trailer's are OK.... GWB to Cross Bronx Expressway to "Throg's Neck Bridge", Clearview expressway to "LIE" (495) L.I. Expressway (East), bail out at "Nichol's Rd" (97) south, to Sunrise Hwy (27) East to Montauk. Their is a camp ground called "Hither Hill's" by "Gurney's" on the way out, near Montauk, the camp ground is on the beach.
or
Queen's Midtown tunnel to "BQE" (Brooklyn Queens Expressway) to LIE (495) east, same direction's from that point on.
or
Staten Island Expressway to "Verranzanno bridge", BQE to LIE (495) east (same direction's from that point on).

"Ya can change the world But, ya can't change lanes on the Long Island Expressway" :@
anyone can "PM" me the day before they leave, I'll give you my cell phone # in case you have any problem's

That's a tough call for me with the baby and all but, my brother just bought a house in "Mattituck" so now I'm thinking... Don't forget that I'm just a "Little Piddler" 15' sport (Boston Whaler's red headed step child).
mw
would LOVE to blast around w/ you guy's in the bay.

There was at least one 13 ft sport that went around Manhattan with us.
The beauty of camping near the bay is that we will have a lot of options. If it is nice weather, we can go out in the ocean. If it's not so nice, we can stay in the bay and still have a blast.
Camping is great for the kids too.

Research has shown Cedar Point County Park to be boat friendly, they will tolerate trailers at campsites as the boats are moored just off the beach. The campsites are reasonable also, some time in August would work,I am unsure of availability at the park at this time but will check after the holiday.Roger, when are you stateside again ?

Hi Jim,
It's too early to say when I well be back.
I hope I can make this one, but you guys better not plan things around me.
My girlfriend is visiting me in Holland the first 3 weeks of Sept so that time is out for me for sure.
I will do my best to make it if you plan it for any other time.

That park sounds perfect, but I know things sell out fast every summer so you better set dates and get started on some reservations. Usually those places have some spots that are good for groups where you can be flexiable as far as how many people join your party.

I know you could use some help organizing so I hope some others will step up to the plate and give you a hand.
